There is certainly a reason why Aftermath is #18 and not #1. And it's not because it's a "season."
Because it's an on-going comic series. You wouldn't call "Y: The Last Man" a season. You'd call it an on-going comic series. Because it hits the same theme and plot points as a season doesn't automatically mean it's a season. Buffy is set up like a season, title Season Eight, and produced by an Executive Producer the same way a season is, so that is the only reason it's called a season. Angel is produced like a comic is. A writer writes it--Armstrong didn't even have contact with Joss--and the artist draws it. The story arcs, while individual, add to the overall mythos... like a Spider-man comic.
It's not a season. Dassit.

The only season I see as the back-to-back episodes was season 4. Sure they had some back-to-back 3 episode arcs in other seasons like Pylea and Connor's birth, but season 4 was the only one that didn't follow the same format as the other seasons.
To me, a season is a bunch of episodes/issues combined together that has one overall plot/theme. Angel seasons 1-5 all do this.
Aftermath is #18 but it is a new story with a new plot and theme. After the Fall/Aftermath is not a season with an overall theme/plot/etc..
Joss says it isn't season 6, so it's not season 6. Joss is boss. That's all I need to know to agree that it's not a season. We should listen to the beloved creator and just agree that they are two separate stories.
(Sorry if my post sucked, I was just rambling)
