Quick question. If the upcoming "Tales of the Vampire" one-shot doesn't have Joss's name on it and doesn't bear the Season Eight lable, are you going to consider it to be canonical? Isn't that a moot question when "Tales of the Vampires" comics are already considered canon? And thus, the rule of the extending title still applies. And isn't this one-shot being planned by Joss anyways and set in Season 8 timeline? I'm not going to jump off a cliff if it's not, but frankly I find it hard to believe that they're taking a month off to do a project that has no Whedon involvement and won't have his name on it. It's the exact same situation as Spike: After the Fall. No Joss name attached, written by Lynch after the original outline for After the Fall was banged out, but it had the After the Fall moniker of canonicity and was let into the canon party.

In the last Q&A, Scott Allie said this one-shot will help fill in some of the questions as to why society is so willing to accept vampires in their midst... so he's certainly considering it canon.

Isn't that a moot question when "Tales of the Vampires" comics are already considered canon? As I was asking the question with absolutely no idea of how people would answer and with genuine interest in what responses I would get, no, it is definitely not a moot question. Interesting. I was under the impression that it was Scott Allie's idea, that he chose both the writer and the artist. All the better if Joss is on it, but either way, I consider it canon. Well they didn't. They didn't take off the month TO do this project, they're doing this project so we wouldn't be bored when they inevitably took off for a month. Sorta like how "First Night" was, except for only one month instead of two 1/2. True, I definitely consider both the Spike title and this new thing canon. But I wasn't sure that you would. Now I know. So not a moot question at all, seeing that now I have more information than I did when I asked. Yay? Yay!

I understood they were taking off time to give Georges a break.

I thought #24 was Georges break, and that this was to get caught up on the writing. Could be wrong.

Doesn't this answer the question? This is from an interview with AFTERMATH's writer.
What is Joss Whedon’s input in the story? The story will be approved by him.
Is it going to be canon? Ah, there’s the question and the answer is...it depends. It will follow from the events of Angel: After the Fall, it will continue that storyline and subsequent storylines will follow from it. So, yes, it’s considered canon. That said, though, I know to many readers, if it didn’t come from Joss Whedon himself, it’s not canon, and I’m fine with that. If readers don’t like my contribution to this amazing universe, they’re free to dismiss it as some kind of alternate reality blip in the series. Just pretend it never happened. ---- So yeah, it's approved as canon, and it follows the Angel story.

Is that ANGEL: ONLY HUMAN Canon? whats the point of going from non-canon to canon then back to non-canon ... Well I guess if the story is good (and or writen by Lynch) and approved by Whedon, better than nothing...

I think that we should put 'Angel; Only Human' in the same catagory as every issue after #17. I don't take the risk to label the issues. Personally I just see them as the best we can get, a good and possible story that we can consider as what happens after ATF.

I'm of the opinion that we may as well consider all the events of the Angel comic series as canon, including the direct spin-offs such as the upcoming Spike ongoing, until we are told differently.
My thinking is that Joss obviously approved the events of After the Fall and so any events that directly follow on from there are, at the very least, suggested as canon by the nature of what they are (by which I mean a continued story and issue numbering). If Joss makes a point one day of saying this is not the case then so be it but for now I'm happy to consider all events that continue on from After the Fall as canon. Even the stuff I'm not particularly fond of.

I'm of a similar opinion to many of the above. I feel bad for IDW saying effectively "I don't care that you're writing great stories, cause they're not canon" but it's true. I like it when Joss is involved as it's his story and he tells it his way... taking him out of the equation just changes things and I think the series loses overall scope. Joss isn't even putting his name to Angel anymore which worries me. I haven't kept up with AtF, but I'm just going to read Vol 1-4. I'm always curious to read non-canon stuff mind, I love any Buffy book on Slayer mythology even when the canon is not there.... but I won't consider anything I read official unless it has the Joss seal. Saying "Joss okays it" doesn't mean anything to me - he has okayed all merchandise for Buffy/Angel, including Queen of the Slayers and all the other non-canon Buffy books... just okaying something doesn't mean he's signed off to the idea as 'fact'. I know canon is so relative and boils down to sheer pedantry, but I like knowing where I stand with a story, and I cannot invest in characters and their emotion if I don't hold some notion of a reality to that world. Canon is important!

Thanks! And yeah you're quite right, I admit I'm more drawn to canon (I've read and watched EVERYTHING Buffy that's canon), but I love the Tales of the Slayer book volumes for example, even though they are not canon. The only time non-canon gets annoying is when they take the framework and just take it too far... though then again the most horrible interpretation in the Buffyverse I have seen is when Drew Goddard introduced Mecha-Dawn... AND THAT WAS S8 CANON!!!!!!!!! I know comics give writers more leeway and poetic license, but that was ridiculous I thought! Quality is relative, there can be and is some amazing non-canon works out there on Buffy and Angel.

I think that as far as spike aslym and shapupets goes I think that we can call them canon because they are reffered to and have charactors in ATF, now I mean that the events happened in some form or a nother, not exactly as writen, the spike storys have canon flaws but so did Origin in fact the quote from Whedon stated: "The origin comic, though I have issues with it, CAN pretty much be accepted as canonical. They did a cool job of combining the movie script (the SCRIPT) with the series, that was nice, and using the series Merrick."

Does canon matter, sure it does. But at this point in time with the Angel series, I will say that canon does not matter. I really doubt that Joss will really do anything else with the Angel series.
I'm just glad that Angel is still around in some form.

To me I just look at any Buffy or Angel comic as canon. I know a lot of the old comics are not canon, but it's just alot less complecated for me not to worry whats real or not.

It would probably save a lot of argument if we came up with a different word than "Canon" to refer to "stuff that I personally like to think of as real in the Buffyverse."
"Canon" is really supposed to mean "stuff that Joss thinks of as real in the Buffyverse." Stories that he personally oversaw, either as writer or executive producer. That's the material we can all agree on as being "real."
There's nothing wrong with each individual fan having stories they like to think of as having really happened to the characters. We should just call that something other than "canon."
