Hey, guys...anyone else going to SC3 in Arkadelphia, Arkansas?
I'll be presenting a paper called "Vampire Noir: How Angel Subverts The Detective Genre." I'm stoked, as this is my first academic conference, and my first Buffy event!
So...any fellow forumdwellers going?

If it weren't in Arkansas, I'd be there with flying colors. I missed the deadline for submissions this year, as my grad work took over my life. LOL. I'm working on scholarly articles, though.
If I can somehow manage it, I'll be there (as this is my favorite Buffy conference ever).

Another Buffy scholar! Yay!
What are you studying? I'm doing a creative writing/English Ph.D. at the University of Missouri. This will be my first Buffy conference...and the schedule so far looks really, really good!

That's hilarious. I'm a creative writing/English MA (before the phD) at Marshall University.
My big research right now is on the use (and lack) of music and musicians in the Buffyverse.
I checked out the schedule, and it looks like you're slotted at a good time, so I wouldn't miss my other stuff. I'd be there all 4 days/nights. What about you??
I'm starting the plan now.

I'm coming down on Thursday, and leaving probably immediately after my panel. (I've got to start teaching/coursework again on the 9th...eep!) Awesome! It will be good to know there's someone from the board in the audience!
Right now, I'm looking at Angel as a subversion of the hard-boiled detective genre...for next year, I have plans to look at either scopophilia in Buffy, or Spike's status as a neurasthenic 19th century male. My main areas of focus in my Ph.D. (I'm just a first year) are shaping up to be fiction writing(obviously), 19th century literature, and film...it's nice how Buffy can be molded to fit any of those categories! Music in Buffy/Angel is a very rich topic...it's always amused me how the "band of the week" attempts, awkwardly, to comment on the events of the show...and how the music swells predictably at emotionally pregnant moments...!

LOL. I'm doing an in-depth analysis of 'Pavlov's Bell' playing while Spike learns about his trigger, and I'll also be close-reading "Blue' from 'Conversations with Dead People.' From there, I might direct my focus towards the season finale songs and the summary of the season through final songs portrayed (i.e. Full of Grace, season 2, Prayer of St. Francis, season 6). Then, I want to study theories on 'Restless,' 'Hush,' and 'The Body.' Once I finish with that, I'm going to do some serious work on character studies. Then, I'll do some work on literary parallelism and techniques.
I'm trying to figure out how to afford the trip. I may talk my buddy into going with me to split the cost, since he's a big Buffy fan and a scholarly creative writer.
"scopophilia in Buffy, or Spike's status as a neurasthenic 19th century male" -Either one of these sounds awesome.
I'll be finishing my MA and I'm applying to PhD programs for Fall 2009. My main areas of focus for my MA/PhD are creative writing (in general), female picaresque/bildungsroman novels from the Second Wave feminism, 20th century literature/poetry, and teaching college English (first year composition), so my Buffy work kind of stems from there, too. Buffy does fit really well into all sorts of things. It amazes.
