Will the Vampire People Please Leave the Lobby by Alyson Beatrice. Not exactly about BtVS, but it's about on-line fandom and more. The author got involved in BtVS, AtS, Firefly fandom and being a journalist of sorts decided to write a book about it. FYI, NPR as already tagged this book as a must read for the summer. I think this will be a very good read for many of us.

Haha, National Public Radio! And I can just imagine that people will go out and buy it because NPR said they should. Those NPR people are like missionaries, they keep saying, "Have you heard the word of National Public Radio?" I know at least two people (both of which have majors that you could say are subdivisions of the English category) have reccomended it to me, and one of them actually forced me to listen to an episode of it about Super Heroes. Although it was interesting, what was more interesting was the great lengths at which my sister went to get me to listen to it.

Ok, but as many of you've already herad, Allyson Beatrice and her publisher arranged for Barnes & Noble for any earlier release of Will the Vampire People Please Leave the Lobby. Since I'm the pitiable geek I am, I was at my local B&N on Monday evening and bought the book. I've read at least the first sixty pgs. and can report it's a very easy read, and I'm enjoying it, alot. Allyson writes in a very journalistic (IOW, daily newspaper) manner. The book is a series of essays about her experience as an online fandom leader. For example and early essay is about she and Tim Minear became pretty good friends. After I finish reading it I'll have more to say for sure. Question, Mad Scientist is your message an objection to NPR recommending a book like this, because there seems to be some unexpressed anger in your message? IMO, since Allyson refers to episodes by name and gives no textual context to them, I think non-BtVS fans and those who are completely naive to Buffy will be very confused by the text.

;D I finished the book over the weekend, read a large bulk on my train commutes into Chicago over the weekend. There were a few things that I found as a negative. For example, Allyson seems to have some issue with scholars who incorporate analysis of BtVS into their academic endevours. Because the first essay in her book starts with making light and generally having a good ole laugh about the Slayage conference in Nashville. THis essay, IMO, goes against the tone of her other essays. I still liked the book lots. More to follow.

So the book was more like a published essay then?

I bought and READ the entire book on Monday. It isnt a big essay. Its more of part of an autobiography, but dealing with ideas about Buffy and the internet. It is a very entertaining book, but I have to disagree with Alyson B. She continuously mentions immature 13-yr-old boys who post silly unknowledgable crap at forums and type like tHiS. I am in the middle of writing an email to her, cause I was younger than 13 when I first started exploring the web, and look what I do now. I didnt know that designing and organizing a 100 Question LIVE Buffy Trivia Contest was immature crap, along with the other things I do and have done.
