Ripper was originally a proposed television show based upon the character of Rupert Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer (created by Joss Whedon). More recent information has suggested that if Ripper were ever made it would be a TV-movie or a DVD-movie.[3] Giles, played by British actor Anthony Stewart Head, was nicknamed 'Ripper' while he was dabbling in the occult during his rebellious youth. Whedon said that the show would be in the tradition of "classic English ghost stories" and would explore the theme of loneliness. Head described the idea as being like "Cracker with ghosts";[4] Whedon elaborated on some the themes he had planned for the series: "The people who live there, it's all very isolated. [Giles] himself has been gone for many years. He was surrounded by a de facto family that he no longer has. And [he is] sort of picking up his life all alone, and then getting involved in the underbelly of other people's lives, and finding out all about them. Loneliness is what I think of. It may not be the theme so much as the emotional intent of the series, but that's what really attracts it to me the most"[5] It was later reported that Whedon had written the two-hour pilot, and that Espenson and other Buffy staff writers had penned story outlines for other potential episodes.[6] Originally in 2001, the show was planned to be aired as a miniseries on the BBC. Later mentions suggested a TV movie, however in an interview in December 2005, Head suggested that Ripper would be a "two hour movie, that might become part of a series of [Buffyverse] DVDs".[7] Whedon is presently involved in Runaways and Buffy Season 8. At Comic Con 2007, Joss Whedon confirmed that talks were almost completed for a 90-minute Ripper special on the BBC,[1] with both Head and the BBC completely on board. The development process is set to begin in 2008 and Ripper is to be shown in the summer of that year. ((I am sooooooo happy!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ))

I was excited when this was first announced in July, but now I'm sort of doubting it. I'm hoping it will be made at some point, but there is just no way it will released in 2008 and Joss has so much going on right now. Last thing we heard it about was that they were waiting for FOX's approval, and that was months ago. I'm praying we'll find out more soon.
I think the coolest idea would be for it to be about Giles, but with Faith tagging along and it picking up after No Future For You, with flashbacks from Giles' past.

Yeah, I heard Sarak Geller is not interested in doing anthing buffy at all...so im made at her now. Not exactly. She's been quoted multiple times saying as long as eveyone is there and the script is good that wont disappoint the audience, she'd be there.

I'm doubting that this is still going to happen, but I would love to see it. The idea of doing a Ripper spin-off has been around for some time, so I am sure there are a lot of great ideas floating around.

Ripper is my absolute favourite thing that could happen Buffy-wise, closely following by a Buffy movie. Really don't get too excited though. This topic is oooooold and there has been absolutely NO updates in a long time. Shows just how hard it is for Joss projects to get rolling. The amount of things we've heard about that are going to happen... this was all but confirmed and still it remains in limbo.

SMG may consider doing one more Buffy thing if there is a good script.

Out of all the proposed Buffy spinoff projects Ripper is something I'd be most interested in. Giles is a fascinating character who really never got the chance to shine on his own. Out of the entire cast (perhaps withstanding Faith and possibly Spike) I think Giles is the only character who could really carry a show (or movie) by himself without the use of other Buffy characters. With the comics going the way they're going (quite well) I'd actually be more interested in seeing this then a full on reunion as I think it has a better potential for not disappointing. A Buffy reunion would have a lot riding on it in order to be successful, this only needs Anthony Stewert Head and a great script.
I'm disappointed that this hasn't really progressed and now that Whedon is working on Dollhouse it's probably further away. But perhaps not, if the rights come through I don't necessarily remember it being a definate that Whedon was going to do the film, perhaps he could leave it in the capable hands of Tim Minear. And remember, we've still got some Buffy news coming to us in July...maybe this is it.

I would love to see this done, but I seriously doubt if it will ever happen. If I remember correctly (which I might not, so please correct me if I'm wrong), the only thing holding back the project was the fact that Fox refused to let BBC use the Giles character. If this actually is the case we will never see Ripper, since it seems that the people at Fox are soulless, spiteful wage-monkeys.

I'm confused-why would Fox not let them use the Ripper character? Wouldn't they get paid somehow by whoever's producing this tv movie? I would love to see a new Buffy movie too but SMG wants to see the script first-if no one will write one until they get paid to do so-and no one wants to pay if she won't sign on first-you see the problem. I don't blame her for wanting to see the script first- she's been burned before (see the Return and Scooby-Doo) as these weren't the movies she signed on to do. Then, who gets blamed when the movies aren't hits? You can all answer that question. OK, the SD movies did make money and I actually liked them both, liked the 2nd one better, but they didn't help her movie career.
