Isn't there a mention of Doyle in season 5 when Lindsey McDonald shows back up and sends the amulet to Wolfram & Hart, then sends the flash to make Spike corporal again. Then of course he goes to see Spike and claims he gets the P.T.B (powers that be) visions and sends Spike out on missions... all under the assumed name Doyle. The whole thing praticly mirrors Angel and Doyle in Season One, well at least for a few episodes...

Yes, Lindsey comes back under the assumed name "Doyle" in the same role the real Doyle was in with Angel in "City Of" but in this scenario, the Angel is Spike. And Lindsey got Spike to bite Cordelia when she came back in "You're Welcome" and upon realizing his mistake, Spike says that "Doyle" (really Lindsey) had sent him to kill her and that he said Cordy was evil.
I read that in "You're Welcome", they literally had to stop shooting because David Boreanaz, Charisma Carpenter, and Christian Kane would begin tearing up and crying about Glen Quinn's death a few months before. I also remember reading that David was really mad at the writers for putting that Lindsey was using Doyle's name just months after Glen's death. And at one point, Charisma was like openly sobbing.

Doyle was just a short term character until Wesley arrived.

I like Doyle, but I don't think that he would have worked as a long-term character. Doyle never seemed to click with Angel and Cordelia, in the way that Wesley did. I don't think that Glenn Quinn's acting clicked well with the show.

My friend is watching Season 4 of Buffy and Season 1 of Angel at the same time (for the first time) and texted me in the middle of the night last night, saying how upset she was that Doyle died. She was really pissed off. o.0

I've heard they got rid of Doyle because of Glenn Quinn's heroin addiction but I also heard he always intened to kill him off just like Jesse. Interesting to think how he might have turned out when you consider Wes? Dolah?
