I just had to make this after what you said: I present....FANGRA! BAHAHAHAHAHAHA! If I could give you all the karma in the world, I would. Also, yeah, I've thought about this, too. But don't the vampires in the Buffyverse have some kind of magical blood flow? I mean, how would they sire people if they didn't bleed?

I always assumed it was some kind of rigor mortis they could attain after feeding, as they'd have extra blood lol. Maybe all of them have been spelled by the "member demon" so that if you wish it to be at attention, it is. Hey, if Anyanka could use a necklace why not? Or maybe the demon in them can control it like Emmie said, cause how else could they walk and talk? It's kinda the same right? My next question is, IS IT COLD? I have always wondered that, lol. Cause that would just be really bizarre. Great Fangra pic....that is epic! The pic to the right just cracks me up.

Can't believe I never noticed this thread before. I have to admit I've wondered about the whole sex issue for quite some time. It's never really explained in the show, it's just one of those things that you just chalk up to creative license.
If I had to give an explanation I'd say it's a combination of the demon & the blood that vamps drink in order to function properly.
You can say that the demon spirit replaces the heart and instead of pumping blood it pumps a different kind of life force that reanimates the dead host and gives a vampire the power to perform all the tasks it could when it was human only adding extra strength and healing power. Now the demon spirit can only do so much, and just like the human heart, it needs a power source to draw from. Fresh blood acts as fuel.
That of course is just my way of thinking.
I'd imagine that a vamp's 'member', as well as the rest of their body, would be more room temperature than cold.

I used to wonder this myself, but when you stop and think about it, there's a ton of stuff a vamp's body can do that a corpse can't.
They seem to be able to grow new skin cells, muscle, hair, nails etc. If a vampire can't get an erection due to thier lack of bloodflow, you're thinking about it too deeply. Because following that same line of thought should mean that gravity would casue a vamp's blood to pool up at thier feet and have no blood in their upper body.
The demon that animates the vamp can cause the body to do all sorts of things a corpse shouldn't be able to do. I don't find it too far fetched that the demon could get a hard-on.

This is simply just a plot hole, like the many others in the 'verse. Like, how can Spike smoke if he doesn't breathe? And get an erection if he doesn't have circulation (as Buffy so cutely points out in Pangs). Why does Angel always look out of breath when he runs? Sum it up lazy writing. I think it would have been great to have Buffy and Spike engage in this conversation on the rug in his crypt after one of their passionate nights together...I can see it now: Buffy: So, last night was great and all but, how do you uh, get an erection if you don't have blood circulation? Spike: Well, luv, it has to do with poetic license, I think. Is that what they call it? Or maybe it's a result of my magical vampire sexual powers. Buffy: Or maybe you have a magical penis. Spike: Yeah. That would be it. My personal opinion/explanation is that they obtain power from the blood they drink. It courses through their veins and acts on the same level and with the same purpose it would in a human. In this case, it aids in their erections, I guess. Unfortunately, I doubt the writers thought we'd be putting so much thought into this

He's still got lungs, he can fill them with whatever he wants. As for vampire penis, I'm willing to bet that, because vampires had to have evolved like other humans, demons, etc. (see First Evil and the Turok-Han) that there may have been an evolutionary need for vampire blood to self-regulate without the convenience of a beating heart. They're magical creatures, after all - having a physiological system that self-regulates blood flow without a beating heart isn't completely out of the question. And as long as the blood can flow, sexual arousal can occur. ...But you've so sold me on the Fangra thing. Where can I *ahem* trial a few? <_<

Ok, I know this isn't about Buffy but it is about Vampire's and sex so I guess this is the right place to put it.
Edward in twilight is freezing cold. Is having sex with him like having sex with a popsicle?

LOL Love the thread title! Personally I think it is just another one of the vampire inconsistencies in the series (like hair growth and breathing). Technically, they really shouldn't be able to have sex. Like you said, there's no blood pumping through their bodies. So it's really a "let's just not talk about it" sort of subject that is used to get away with it, like the breathing and hair growth subjects. so true. i think it was one of those things they just overlooked.

Is having sex with him like having sex with a popsicle? He's not FREEZING cold...just colder than the norm. I assume that friction heats things up pretty well. ...did I really just respond to this topic for a Twilight comment...? *dies*

I was sitting on a couch with my girlfriend last night watching the first episode of season 4 (because I have recently gotten her addicted to the show . After the episode was over she randomly looks up at me and says "Angel doesn't have a heartbeat right?". To this I answered "Yeah thats right. He doesn't". She then said "Well...then how does he get hard in order to have sex?". I started thinking about it, and I really had no answer to give her. Do vampires have magic vampire penises? Do they not need blood-flow in order to get an erection? Do they take a special version of Viagra (Fangra perhaps?) Maybe there is something simple that I've overlooked, or maybe it's been explained before in the show but I don't remember it happening. Thoughts? Theories? Promotional ads for the Vampire Viagra you've been secretly working on? I've wondered this too. Along with how they can get pregnant. But yes, it is one of those inconsistances. You just have to throw realism out the window when it comes to things like this.
