However they kept Kate’s identity hidden and kept saying that an old character was returning in first night. If it really had nothing to do with selling comics why would they bother telling us ahead of time that she was coming back and hiding her identity so we would buy the comic to find out who she was Any time something is teased to the readers, then sure, that can be skewed as a way to sell more comics. It is a business and the main goal is to make a profit. However, the same thing can be said about new covers, previews, cliff hanger endings, etc. There are many aspects of comics that make readers want to buy the next issue. We were told that an old character was returning, sure, but overall, Kate's purpose in the story was not to sell more issues. Her appearance actually served a purpose that helped further the development of another character in the series. If that's not the complete opposite of "gimmick," I don't know what is.

As for Kate's return, calling it a gimmick is misunderstanding why she was brought back. The writer, Brian Lynch, brought her back because he thought she would contribute to the story. Then IDW marketed her return in the ways stated above about the "mystery woman" returning. Calling Kate's return a gimmick to sell more comics is putting the cart before the horse. She was coming back because Lynch had a story for her in mind first, then IDW marketed her return in order to capitalize on the story Lynch was writing.
On another point, if they were going to bring a character back just to raise sales - why would they bring back Kate? I like her character, but there are a lot of vocal fans who were very glad she was gone.
I agree with Wyndam that Kate was brought back to pass along Angel's epiphany to Connor. One of the most profound statements Angel ever made on the show was said to Kate and while I think Angel has at times forgotten the message that "all that matters is what we do", clearly Kate remembered and is living her life with that mission statement inspiring all she does.

I have always had mixed feelings toward kate. Nonetheless, I thought she was an interesting character and I enjoyed the dynamic between she and Angel. I agree that her story should've had more closure. I often found myself wondering what happened to her after that last episode. I was happy to see her appearance in After the Fall, and even happier when she referenced the 'Epiphany' speech that Angel once said to her. So, we can clearly see that Angel's words made a lasting impression on Kate that day. That Speech is still one of my fave of the series till this day, so I was happy to see it referenced again. Made quite an impression on me as well. And I think it's cool that kate used those same words to help Connor out. Hopefully, we will be seeing her again in the comic.
As far as how Angel was able to get into her apartment, I always chalked it up to devine intervention by the PTB. I think that's what we were supposed to take from it, anyway.

I liked Kate, but as the series went on, she started to annoy me. Among all the "civilians" who learn about the existence of otherworldly creatures, she was the most annoying. I know not everyone will react the same way to things but she reacted the worst. True, she lost her father, and is allowed to freak out. But willow and Xander lost Jesse and they turned out fine.

Totally agree with you. I think people often think that our favorite stories should be told with such integrity that the creators should not be looking to make a profit. If they were not looking to make money or sell more comics, then ATF would not exist. There are marketing people whose jobs are to look at the product they have and figure out the best way to sell it. If Joss Whedon never thought about making money, then "Angel" would have never happened; He planned on Buffy Season 2 being the end of Angel, but he brought him back because the WB wanted a spin-off. In my opinion this took some impact away from his death and Buffy's experience killing him. But I'm glad he brought Angel back, because I love me some Angel!

She will be back... i can't imagine they bring her back and then don't mention her anymore.
