Ok, first of all, I've seen all TV episodes of Buffy but I"m only now working my way through the Angel DVDs, so can I ask for no spoilers past Season 2 in this thread? I'd really appreciate it.
I just finished Season 2. Overall I liked it much better than Season 1 (which I saw awhile ago and thought was ok, but not great. Had its moments but overall just not that compelling. I should write a whole separate post about how pissed off I was about the episode where Angel became human for a day. But anyway.)
I liked the plot with Darla. Very interesting to see Angel getting messed with mentally, going darker and darker. Although I thought his epiphany back to the light was very sudden. When he slept with Darla I knew he wasn't going to lose his soul. It was so obvious, from the way they filmed it, from the fact that it would ruin his great love story with Buffy... But I wonder if HE knew it. Did he think he'd lose his soul? He knows its "a moment of pure happiness" that's the issue, not just sex, but yet we never see him have sex and when Cordelia says that sex would turn him evil he never corrects her. Has he slept with anyone other than Buffy in the past hundred years? Does he know before this that he can safely have sex as long as he isn't in love with the girl?
The end of the season adventure to Pylea. I enjoyed watching it, but a lot of it bugged. I think I just grew up reading too much fantasy and sci fi, so I was thinking things through too much. They had a whole day to kill and they didn't pack any food or weapons? They didn't get Lorne to answer any specific questions about the place they were going, like do we need warm clothes, can we find water, will it be SUNNY AND KILL ANGEL IMMEDIATELY gee maybe we should put the top of the car down before we teleport into a completely unknown dimension. I mean I understand that the plot worked great with the different sun not affecting Angel, but they didn't know that ahead of time. It would have worked better if they'd jumped in right after Cordelia and not had any time to plan. As it is its ridiculous that these supposedly intelligent and experienced people didn't bother to plan or pack anything, or find out about where they were going from the person who used to live there.
Lorne (the stupid green karaoke demon in case you all thought he was boring enough not to learn his name until the very end of the season, like me, and only barely then) was the most flat and one note character I've ever seen. Its one thing when he has a cameo in a couple episodes, but if you're going to explore his whole life and backstory, he can't keep being so ... depthless. He's also shallow, but that's not what I mean. I mean the character is written with no depth whatsoever. He talks like a stereotype of a gay man in LA, which is funny for about 6 seconds while he's running his club, but is ridiculous when he actually has his head cut off and he is still talking and joking the exact same way. Usually when you find out about a character's deep dark past, you see hints of a different person in them. He grew up on Pylea, I can't believe he didn't think to wear different clothes, his voice didn't fall back into a different style of speech, he didn't take anything more seriously! Also I thought having his head be cut off and then him come back to life was a total copout. His death to bring the seriousness of their situation home to Queen Cordelia would have been a good end to a pointless character, but no, its just played for laughs. I hope he never comes back in Season 3, but I bet he will. Bleh.
