Now here is something that has always really bugged me...its very silly but what DID Angel give Cordy in the episode Birthday?!?! Seeing as they were getting more involved with the Cangel relationship by this stage, I like to think it was some beautiful piece of jewellery or a really thoughtful, sentimental gift. (hopefully he's got more sense than to give her a Claddagh ring...its been done Angel! ) So basically...what do you guys think? Speculations, silly or serious are welcome...anything to ease my persistent curiosity!!

I never thought of this! Pretty interesting that we never found out, now that I think about it. Perhaps a scene was filmed where Cordy opens it (or maybe even Angel in his depression to get her back), but had to be cut for time? The "what is in the box?" reminds me of those silly Heroes promos from Season 2 when they tried to make everyone think there was something life altering in a box that just had Peter's drivers license in it. My guess would be either jewelry or the key to Angel's hotel room.

Hmmm... It would be a very Angelish thing to do to give her a Claddagh ring...but perhaps jewelry of some sort? It seems small enough, plus he knows that she's usually quite the fashionable gal. Maybe some sort of magical item? A weapon? She was starting to get pretty good with fighting....or my money's just on a Saks or Neiman Marcus gift card, that's something that she would go to town with

Lol, Cordy would love it, but I don't see Angel as the gift card type... I say necklace.

That looks like a box for earrings. I'm going to guess some Claddagh earrings.

Nothing Claddagh. That's too intimate. But something really thoughtful.
Or expensive. Probably jewelry.
From Tiffany's?

Maybe he's tricking her because he doesn't have a blue box? haha that would be the way to go for Cordy. Perhaps jewelry that could be used as a weapon or had some mystical protection imbued with it?

I like to think that it was a Claddagh ring or a cross necklace because it'd show that Angel had moved on from Buffy and really cared about Cordelia. Still, unfortunately, if they actually had shown it, I doubt it would have been either of them...the wank from rabid Bangel fans would have been endless.

My favourite theory so far is the key to Angel's room! It probably was jewellery or some description...but seriously, anything Claddagh related would be soooo tacky. Angel isn't tacky...is he??!?!

If Cordelia had been given across or claddagh ring, or anything similar to what Angel had given Buffy, she would have freaked out. It's weird, because you don't give your friends or potential girlfriends something you've kinda given your ex. That would send weird signals. Also, I bet there's a fashion rule out there that says that you can accept a gift that's "been given" to another girl.
I also don't think Cordelia wants to own anything similar to what Buffy has. Clothes, shoes, jewelry, you name it.

That looks like a box for earrings. I'm going to guess some Claddagh earrings. I'm going with earrings. The box is too small for weapons and Cordy was wearing a very nice pairing of earrrings in the following episode.

Good insight there, Dragonweaver.

I never noticed that, but now that I have, I'm gonna say that it was earrings in the box

Birthday
The Good; what might have been. CC makes a great sitcom star, you think that she might easily have got that role. Lovely scene where Fred meets Phantom Dennis. I think some great acting from DB as mad Angel. Love the fact that Gunn never believed that Wes knew and had kissed Cordy. Some good comedy from Skip. Great final scene. The Bad; Not much, very strong ep. I don't like the way that Cordy just hears the end of Angel's pleading so she get's the wrong end of the stick, such a cliche (but then Skip is manipulating her?). Tammy's accent makes her sound like Dick Van Dykes' daughter. And would she really be called Tammy which seems like a name for a Californian valley girl?
Best line; Skip; "Get out of here. No, really, get out of here!" Wheldon Cliches;
Character death; Despite Cordy never teaming up with Angel, Doyle is still dead. However if Cordy is a sitcom star and Fred has gone back to Texas surely they both live? And maybe Wes does too? Shot;
Tied up;
Knocked out; Cordy get's the mother of all knockouts
Women good/men bad; Cynthia's dad ran out on her and her mum Kinky dinky; Cordy's sitcom outfit is very revealing. Gunn refers to Cordy's underwear drawer and Fred replies that she for 5 years she didn't wear any. Still?
Calling Captain Subtext; Guantanamo Bay;
Questions and observations; So, what happened Wes' arm? Note that even without Cordy, Wes and Gunn still find each other. Presumably they also still rescue Fred but without Angel to moon over she just heads back to live with her folks in Texas. What do Buffy and the other Sunnydale Scoobies do about Angel's madness?
3/5, good ep, not great
