From SciFiWire.com: Joss Whedon, co-creator and director of the hit Web musical Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, told a group of reporters that a sequel could take any form: another Web series or even a feature film. The three-part series' success on the Web, DVD, iTunes and CD could interest studios in funding a big-budget sequel, but Whedon intends to keep things intimate.
"Well, we don't want to be beholden to anybody," Whedon said in a group interview on Tuesday in Hollywood at a Paley Fest panel on the show. "We want to do the product the same way we did the first one, which is out of our hearts, and then go to people [and say], 'OK, if you're interested in this, this is what it is.' Besides, it could be something theatrical. It could be something on the Internet again, where it's done on the fly and it all comes from us. We don't know how we want that to be. The best thing to do is to write it. Then we can start deciding a business model based on the script."
A feature-length Dr. Horrible sequel is a serious consideration but not definite. "We've talked about doing an actual studio film, and we've talked about doing an independent tiny little thing," Whedon said. "We've talked about everything in between, the bumper sticker, whatever format."
In a separate interview, co-writer and composer Jed Whedon (Joss' brother) said the sequel's length would be determined by the medium in which it appears. "It depends on what form it takes," Jed said in an exclusive interview on the red carpet. "The story that we're talking about is pretty big, so it might end up being longer."
Maurissa Tancharoen, co-writer and Jed's fiance, added that the writers could find a way to bring back Felicia Day's ill-fated Penny for a sequel. Not that they would invalidate the dramatic effect of Penny's death.
"Penny is definitely dead, but there are ways," Tancharoen said. "We love Felicia so much. Maybe she'll do catering while we shoot the movie."
Jed added: "It's movie magic, so there are a lot of different things we can do. We just want to hang out with her."

That's interesting. A movie would be very cool, but I wonder how it'd work, seems like it'd be hard to translate it to film and appeal to a broader audience. I think the web series format is perfect.

It exciting to read some solid buzz about a sequel. I don't really care what format Dr. Horrible 2 comes in, just as long as the story is good and worth watching. With that said I kind of agree with hitnrun017 that if a sequel is made it might do better on the internet than with a feature length release.

I think a feature length Dr. Horrible could do pretty well. Musicals are always popular, as are comedies. I have heard a bunch of random people talking about Dr. Horrible around campus ever since it was released, so the reach outside of the Whedonverse is definitely possibly, as opposed to a Buffyverse movie or Serenity sequel. Either way, Internet sequel or feature length, I just want more.

Production will most definitely be low-budget like the first, as Joss says above, he wants to keep it "intimate" (read: No studio execs getting in the way of artistic expression).
Release, however, could make or break real profits to be made on a sequel. DVD and iTunes sales won't depend on method of release, but rather the extent and method of which it is marketed. I think there is still an enterprise to be had in internet marketing where, let's face it, the majority of Joss' fanbase haunts. Even with a limited release in theaters, if it is marketed well, it could prove very profitable for such a low-budget venture.
That said, I love the way the first was released. Utilizing the internet in such a fashion, it literally revolutionized streaming media. I think they should build upon that business model instead of reverting back to mainstream marketing methods.

I just read the production is planned to begin in spring 2010!!!!!!! Dunno but u guys, but having an almost certain date of production makes it look so much more real!! "MR: I know you just did the "Dr. Horrible" panel at Paleyfest, but I'm still not sure -- is there a definitive next chapter for that?
JW: We absolutely, categorically intend to do the next chapter.
MR: Before the aughts are through or what?
JW: It has to be during everybody's hiatus -- the actors, that is. I think ultimately we would be very disappointed if we weren't filming it next spring. That's when the next hiatus is. The problem is that I and all the writers have jobs. That may not be the case for all of us [laughs]. But whether it is or not, "Dr. Horrible" means to much to us. And working with those guys-- Neal [Patrick Harris] is amazing, Felicia [Day] is amazing. Nathan [Fillion] -- I think I might have an addiction."YAY \o/ source: featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/entertainment_tv/2009/04/dollhouse-joss-whedon-fox-eliza-dushku.html

Wow, thanks marcos.damata. Looks like Felicia is a definite in the sequel Just "Marcos" is fine ;D and yeah, another DH without Felicia wouldn't be as fun. Penny is Billy's biggest emotional issue, and Felicia is just so lovely!

Hehehehe... "catering"
Wow, this would be amazing. I'd love a movie. I do want it to still be INTIMATE and not affected by the 'wants' of a mass audience, but I'd love it to have a big budget and the ability to reach me here in AUS.

Thats sounds cool, although they may take it to far ans ruin Dr. Horrible all together. Well I will look forward to it and hope that it is just as good as the first ;D

I would love to see a sequel to this. The set up allows for plenty of options. Obviously I would love to see neil and nathan back. Always room for Felicia in a dream sequence or something plus the chance to expand on the story's mythology and setting.
it has real potential and I hope they get the chance and the budget to do what they want to do rather than feeling they need to cut corners on their work.

I don't think Joss would allow it to go so far as to ruin Dr. Horrible, but there is a chance that it could just not live up to expectations.
Not that it would stop me from seeing it. I would love to listen to Neil and Nathan sing Joss songs again!

And at the risk of sounding like a complete fan boy, how about Amber in the cast for the new one? Could play a new nemisis for Dr Horrible, or perhaps a rival in the Evil League of Evil. She's a good actress and Buffy showed what a fabulous voice she has.

That's a great idea! I'd love to see and hear Amber again. It would give her a chance to be more of an outgoing character, which would be great to see.

Yay! This sounds awesome, I think a feature length film would do the characters the most justice

I think a feature film would be great, but at the same time I like the statement they were making with it being a web-series. In Joss's emmy acceptance speech he said that the greatest rebellion is joy, and I really like that Dr. Horrible is a bit of a rebellion. It doesn't involve the big wig executives and therefore can't shut it down, or mess it up.
To be clear, I'd be down with any form it takes, but there is something good and I think important to be said the way they're doing it already, and it sounds to me from the Joss intereview that he does intend to keep it on a similar field.

As much as I love Dr Horrible I imagine a sequel would be very different.
The way I see Dr Horrible is the transformation of someone who really wants to be a villain, possibly for the novelty of it, to someone truly evil with darkness in his soul. So I imagine a sequal to be in a different format, not a musical, and infact very dark with Dr Horrible as a real evil villain.
But that's just my view, I imagine most people's differ from that...
