So i'm watching Just Rewards and:
So it was established that Spike, when attached with his chip, couldn't hurt anything living (except Buffy), butcould still hurt demons because they're technically "not living", but Lorne is not your average demon. He doesn't have any powers that could hurt anyone; no super strength, laser vision, vamp teeth, etc. so in theory it could go either way...
what do you think?

He's still a demon though, no matter how good he is. So yeah, Spike could hurt Lorne.

Something to back up Wyndam's point: Spike's chip does not differentiate between good and evil. He can't hurt bad humans.

Something to back up Wyndam's point: Spike's chip does not differentiate between good and evil. He can't hurt bad humans. More to the point, it didn't differentiate between living and not living things, but rather demonic and non-demonic things. Spike could hurt Buffy because she came back different under the spell with Osiris, enough to confuse the chip. So yeah, it'd work on Lorne, though as you may know, Spike didn't have a chip when he met Lorne.

I wonder if he could hurt animals. Or pick flowers.
For the chip to make sense, it should make Spike able to kill anything non-human. I mean, how else could the not-chip work on so many different demons? I'm guessing the scientists put a sense-humanity-detector in the chip and setled with that.
I wonder if they used magic.

Yeah, they say living things but some of the demons are living, so that doesn't make sense. They should have just said "humans" and left it at that. Funny little drabble addressing the issue... goldenusagi.livejournal.com/12993.html

From what I understand, they chip doesn't recognize things such as "living" or "not living." I don't even think it recognizes things like "demon." My understanding is that is a purely electronic chip that, when Spike thinks of hurting someone or actually does hurt someone, determines via some kind of mysterious bio sensor whether the target falls into the category of "human" or "not human." Then, if the target is determined human, the chip delivers the neurological shock.
So if this is the case, Lorne beware. Plants and puppies, put on your party hats.

didn't harmony say "Spike can't even pick flowers!"? and spike definitely said something about him not being able to hurt livingn things... i think that's why buffy was so freaked when spikes chip didn't effect her, didn't she think she wasn't really alive, therefore spike could hurt her?

I figured Harmony saying he couldn't pick flowers was her being her ridiculous self. Also, I'm thinking the "living things" statements were made prior to him knowing he could hurt demons. I could easily be mistaken.

He tears grass out of the ground in Something Blue when Buffy finds him quickly with Willow's unwitting aid. Grass = living plants, so yes Spike can hurt plants even shortly after the chip's installation when it should be working properly.

True, he did hurt the grass.
I forgot that.
