This is a thread to talk all about Tarja Turunen and her music (including her time in Nightwish). For those people who don't know who she is you should check out her stuff. I will post some videos bellow.
"Tarja Soile Susanna Turunen Cabuli (born August 17, 1977, Finland) is a mezzo-soprano and songwriter, best known as original member and the former female vocalist of Finnish heavy metal quintet Nightwish. She was dismissed from the band on October 22, 2005 after nine years. Turunen is now devoting her time to her solo career under the stage name of Tarja. She is married to Argentine businessman Marcelo Cabuli. Tarja has also appeared in various Finnish television programs, and was a guest judge on "Idols" on March 27, 2007. She is seen as one of Finland's biggest singers, having been called "the voice of Finland" by Tarja Halonen, the Finnish president."
She has been having a hard time getting of her feet in America and UK but she is an amazing singer.

I like some Nightwish songs when Tarja was the singer, but I actually prefer Nightwish's new vocalist (the singer on Dark Passion Play). Tarja's voice is a little too operatic sounding for me.

I prefered Nightwish with Tarja. I don't like Anette Olson (new singer). Tarjas voice is what made Nightwish different but now that they have a new singer they are just like any other metal band. Tarjas solo stuff is better than Nightwishes new stuff. Although Nightwishes older stuff beats both.

Loved tarje's work with Nightwish and love "My Winter Storm" as well. Operatic symphonic metal at its best.

Yeah. 'Wish I Had An Angel' by Nightwish was pretty good. The band kind of sucks without her though

I SOO much prefer Annette to Tarja.
To me personally, tarjas voice just never really fit with the music. She does have an incredible voice and yes when she was the lead singer of nightwish her voice did make them different to a lot of other bands but regardless, I just find Annettes voice fits with the music a lot better.
Dark Passion Play is a pretty awesome album.
Plus Annette is a lot less diva-ish...when Tarja was in the band every concert she seemed to have to have at least 6 costume changes.lol.

I agree that Tarja did become a little more diva as the years passed. Annette sounds good on the album but she is always terrible live. On the other hand Tarja sounded great in the album and even better live. Alot of people dont think Tarjas voice matched the music. But I think that her operatic voice credited the music.

Beautiful woman, great voice, and I really appreciate that I was able to see her live with Nightwish before the band tarnished its respectability and lost the fire they had back in the day. I also saw them with Anette, and was able to meet her as well, but the feel was completely different. With Tarja they were a great collaboration, and with Anette they're a tight pop-metal band with bad lyrics, but decent music.
Her solo work thus far has been quite nice, but she's definitely been playing semi-safe rather than trying to stand completely on her own two feet. She does seem happier than before, so I'm quite glad that the break happened. Nightwish have continued to progress towards massive, money hoarding, commercial cow, but still make catchy melodies with overtly pretentious lyrics.

You are so lucky to have seen Nightwish with Tarja. I don't mind Nightwish with Annete although she seems to be a terrible singer live. I think Tarjas solo stuff is brilliant although I see what you mean about playing it safe.

It was definitely a sight to see when they were together. I don't mind Anette either, and as I mentioned before, Nightwish are still a very catchy band with nice melodies, but I just don't find any of the emotion there was back in the Tarja "era."
I think Tarja's best solo work thus far have been songs like "Oasis" and "The Reign" where she has gone as far away from the metal/rock as possible and into that film score sound. Is it nice to hear her with guitars every now and then? Yes, but not so much as hearing her accompanied by beautiful orchestras, tribal drums, and lyrics which really suit her voice much better. The symphonic rock thing can get old really fast. She needs to start trusting herself more and composing/writing songs on her own like she did with "Oasis" as I truly believe that it is the best song on the first album.

I agree. I think its do with the fact she has been with Nightwish for so long. She is so used to the symphonic rock and she feels comfortable and safe with it. She probably thinks that this is what all her fans want. I wouldnt like a Tarja album with no symphonic rock, just around two or three per album because I really like her movie scorish stuff best. It makes her Tarja and not Nightwishes old lead singer. M favourite Tarja song is 'Boy and the Ghost'. I dont know what it is that makes me love it but I think its great. I really like the part where the music changes and she says "wake up wake up theres an angel in the snow". The song just gets me hooked on it
