Yeap... I can see the idea of Buffy being a nutcase does not appeal to a lot of people here. Only 2 votes against 13 votes for "shut up Buffy is a not a cuckoo!!"
Once again, I'm the minority.

I think it's quite possibly true that Buffy's actually just sitting around chewing on her hair and watching paint peel in a mental institution in Southern California. So... there's three of us. Hooray! We have a club now. ETA: I also have a pet theory that everyone in her imaginary adventures actually has a real persona in her institution life. Like... Angel just might actually be the really cute, very kind nursing aide that used to treat her like she wasn't actually nuts. And Willow's the girl in the room down the hall. And Tara is actually the social worker who is working on her rehabilitation. Xander's just some guy she saw in the hall one day. And so on. Pet theories.

Well, to me none of the choices up there are correct. It says 'Buffy never really was in a mental institute'. But she was, she said so herself, didn't she?
But I am still not really sure if she is crazy or not. I have so say 'no', because they make talk about present day stuff, and if she was locked up in a room she wouldn't know about that kind of imformation.

You know, when you think about it... since both options are fiction (one fiction, and one a fiction within a fiction), it really doesn't make the slightest bit of difference. Is it any different if it's Joss imagining it, or Joss imagining Buffy imagining it?

It could be Joss is imagining all of us, or that we're all imaginings of Buffy's. o_0
Seriously, can I really prove you're not in my imagination?

...what if
What if WE ARE ALL figments of Buffy's imagination?! Fanatical fans creating forums and usernames and graphics and fan-fic in her honor. To help solidify and ground her delusions!

To help solidify and ground her delusions! that reminds me! (well, your signature reminds me) i had a dream i was on slayalive and the layout at the top had changed to a huge lady gaga headshot that would flash and cause me a seizure anyway, i do think it's possible Buffy is in the mental home i'd just rather believe it was real, in a fictional sense i like UnKles theory. i think it was done in a movie or something before? i don't know

In a way, the progression of the story kinda gives some proof that she IS in a mental institution. Every season just gets grander and bigger. Season 5, a sister and all powerful villain just shows up out of nowhere. To season 7, where all these girls become slayers just like her. And then in the season 8 story, they have gadgets and helicopters and secret bases. A really well made up army.
Its my experience that life doesn't keep getting a bigger stage. DrGreenEvil

Can't put too fine a point on this, folks... It's a fantasy story.
A fantasy story in which only plausible things happen = a sucky fantasy story.

Not loving the anti- Season Eight slant to this discussion. "Oh, Buffy must be crazy because S8 is just so unbelievable!!" Uh, whatever. In the show, Buffy can fight Dracula and robots and hellgoddesses and nobody blinks an eye. But in the comics, she lives in a castle and all of a sudden she's ker-azy! I don't think the whole moving to Scotland idea will ever be explained. I'm sure the writers came up with it pretty randomly, like "let's have them hang out in Scotland for a while, it could be awesome". Joss probably wanted a castle base because it would be a cool visual, and Scotland has nice castles so why not there? Buffy's the leader of a world wide operation, why the hell shouldn't she live in Scotland? I bet if she was living anywhere in America nobody would care! *offended*

As Hogwarts has demonstrated, it's easier to hide a castle full of supernatural people in the Scottish highlands... the Brigadoon Effect, I believe it's called.
Also, free wi-fi... nobody's bothered to secure the network since Dumbledore died.

LMFAO, I wasn't going to post anything here (just read it), but I have to say that you seriously made me laugh out loud, Andrew! WOW. Karma for you.
I want Buffy to be training the slayers in the forest and see Hogwarts from afar. LOL.

The mental hospital thing was from Season 6, though. So it's been a running theme, beneath everything since then, albeit it's a running theme nobody likes to discuss. Blame Joss for throwing it out there, though, for even planting the seed of doubt in the first place. Apparently his intent with the ending was ambiguity, so we can all ask ourselves the question from time to time: is this real or not?
