In the episode "SuperSymmetry" we learn that Fred's Professor was the one who sent her to Pylea. But in the episode Belonging, Cordelia gets a vision of Fred reading the book that sent her to Pylea, which makes it seem like Fred sent herself to Pylea by reading from the book.
Can anyone explain this?

I suppose he told her to go get that book.

I always just assumed that Fred's Professor placed the book there purposely, knowing Fred would read it.

SUCH a shitty idea to make her professor responsible btw. Portals or no, surely the cops would be all over this guy?

I always got the idea that it wasn't the book that sent her to Pylea that someone or something else did it. She just happened to be reading a book that could open the portal, but something else opened it not her or the book. I think I'm going to have to watch that episode again, but for right now, I don't think it was because she was reading the book.

And they would be able to prove that the professor used supernatural means to open a portal? Even now, when the world believe in the supernatural, hard to prove, unless Fred told someone that her professor had told her to go get that back. Then he might be questioned. Maybe. I always got the idea that it wasn't the book that sent her to Pylea that someone or something else did it. She just happened to be reading a book that could open the portal, but something else opened it not her or the book. It doesn't prove that you're wrong tough.

If that is the case, I don't remember Fred reading the book out loud in Cordy's vision.

One way to settle this: somebody go and get that book and read it silently. If you don't come back and respond in this thread in a couple days, we'll just assume you're in Pylea.
