Riley's loyalty now seems incredibly ambiguous. We start by believing that he is working for Twilight while lying to Buffy that he is her spy on the inside of the masked avenger's team. But issue #27 now seems to suggest that Riley might actually be protecting Buffy - he is shown brushing off the "spike", almost trying to stop the other man from showing Twilight the information that could reveal Buffy's location. Thus, is he a scooby-spy-who's-actually-supporting-Twilight-but-deep-down-still-on-team-Buffy? This is getting very confusing...

Yep. And Joss, Jane and Scott are rubbing their hands and cackling with glee at our confusion.

I definitely think Riley is a triple agent, ultimately working for Buffy.
A) We haven't been given any backstory about why he'd switch sides (probably because there isn't any)
and
B) There was quite a lot of evidence in #27 supporting the triple agent angle.
I'd be really surprised if Riley was indeed bad.

As of now, it appears Riley is a triple-agent. But, this is made by Joss so expect the unexpected. Right now I think Riley is a quadriple-agent. Bahaha

Double: Buffy --> Twilight Triple: Buffy --> Twilight --> Buffy Quadruple: Buffy --> Twilight --> Buffy --> Twilight Unless he's ultimately working for Willy the Snitch or something.

I know it would only be a double but it would be cool if there was such a thing as a quadruple-agent.

I think the quadruple (et al) agent is possible if all parties know about the previous "layers".
For instance, triple agent is just a singular-agent under that definition.
But let's not discuss the definition of double vs triple vs quadruple agent. The real question is where does Riley's loyalty lie?
I refuse to believe Riley is a truly bad guy. I mean, I know that was Maggie's plan all along, but Riley is such a whitehat it's sad. Remember he allowed vamps to suck on him for a rush, and then immediately stakes the vamp. Like really, who kills their drug dealer right after they took a really good hit?

I think Riley's gonna end up on Buffy's side but it would be interesting to see him being the bad guy and how he turned out to be someone on the other side. In season 5 he was going to darker and darker places but this all seemed to vanish in "As You Were" which always bugged me. Also, this has nothing to do with the thread, but congrats Rebecca to being upgraded to mod-level. I only just noticed.

I definitely think Riley is a triple agent, ultimately working for Buffy. Yeah, I totally see Riley working as a triple agent. Riley would never go through with what Twilight has planned. And he wouldn't do that to Buffy. He's just wouldn't.

That really seemed like a switch from where Riley was at in Into the Woods (another Jane Espenson ep). I'm guessing they were trying to say that marriage to Sam was a stable force in Riley life, she was his rock, something that Buffy's role as a Slayer is constantly keeping her from. Though, we see how far that took him now. Thanks!

Ugh that would really suck cuz then we'd always have to be paranoid about Riley and where his loyalties lie.

wait i'm still really confused... when did it say, in the comics, that Riley was really working for Buffy whilst working for Twilight?

It's suggestable in #27, when he states that the spiking in magical energies is just interference and Twilight ends up believing him, killing the guy who found the spike
