Hey, just read the issue. I don't get the disappointement, I thought it was amazing! I loved every bit of it, also this is probably my favorite Buffy-war, I LOVE that they lost, it's way worst than Dirty Girls. God how I wish this issue is on TV with the actors and the music and the blood and sad-Buffy. Highlights of the issue: - That sad panel with Oz, Bay and their baby wishing Buffy and her friends stayed away from them. - Buffy catching Willow before she fell. -The bodies of dead girls, werewolves, soldiers -the goddesses not siding with both teams. - "We didn't bring help. We brought death." Wonderful job by Jeanty, great drawing of Buffy, captured the likeness and mood quite perfectly. - Dawn shouting military orders. - "So heavy" Weak Buffy! - Buffy and Willow ordering girls to run. - The Buffy/Riley/Xander scene is nothing like the Buffy/Xander/Spike scene. Buffy made sure Riley is safe inside, getting treated and comfortable, then she suddenly remembers Xander and wonders if he's okay. I didn't see anything wrong with this, Buffy hugging Xander is on impulse, she was controlled by her emotions -I actually loved this scene, especially the close up, I can see Nicky and Sarah hugging each other so easily. - I loved the Dawn bit right after it as well. "Buffy?" "Buffy?" - Buffy crying and holding Riley's hand. Aww! - Loved Oz' reply to Riley that all these women are amazing, not just Buffy. - "They all are." Perfect Oz likeness. - Satsu saving Buffy was perfect. - The Scoobies are captured, Buffy's expression at the sight of them losing, all this was great.

Satsu sees a sniper aiming at Buffy (presumably). She shoots the guy, while pushing Buffy out of the way. Buffy falls and lands in the hand of Remati. They share a moment, before Remati drops Buffy. Buffy wakes up, 5 hours later, miraculously unhurt from her high fall. Which would indicate that something is kinda weird, since she was pretty much non-Slayered when she fell. She stands up, closes her eyes, and the vertical lines indicate that she's rising. Then she opens her eyes, and realizes that she's hovering WAY above the landscape. That work? Yeah, I knew all of that, I was just a little unclear about the hovering part. Why would she be flying?

It's not explained yet. According to Allie, we'll start figuring it out in #31.

Loved this issue as well. Started to clarify a few things like the slayers stance on killing now with the war. When Buffy said to help everyone seemed much more slayerish than the outright killing of the soldiers. Granted it was in order to survive themselves but guns and killing humans are about as anti-slayer as it gets.
Also as far as the goddesses being on fire can't say I'm quite sure what everyone is talking about. The goddesses have had fire on them from the moment they were conjured at the end of 29. Didn't see anything extra at the end of the issue to the flames.
Anyway can't wait to see how this all turns out with Buffy being one of few slayers powered again and even more so.

Much better than issue 29, and the art didn't bother me either. The big reveal was more of a who cares moment than a WTF moment to me, and I'm not sure why Allie thought people would be angry about it. It's really not that big of a deal and was overhyped big time. But I'd rather be underwhelmed a little than angry about a plot development. So overall the Retreat arc was good enough, but kind of messy and I felt a little disconnected at times. I've literally just finished reading #30. I was disappointed to be honest. Not the best issue. I did like the battle scenes and the moment between Oz and Riley when Riley commends Buffy and co for being strong amazing women despite overwhelming odds. But I'm a bit annoyed that Allie made out that the ending was going to anger fans. I half expected the death of a major character or something. I liked the art. I think it was Twilight talking about not being able to trust anyone because of the font used. That's been his font throughout. An ok issue but not great. x x x

Sorry, I don't know how to reply to multiple posts at once. So:
That's what Satsu thought. That doesn't mean he actually was. Twilight's plan seemed to be to round Buffy and Co. up after the goddesses were moving on. The soldier though could have been rogue and decided to try to kill Buffy. Which says something about the soldier's loyalty to Twilight.
Dawn hasn't seemed super important to Buffy since Season 5. Relatively, I mean. Xander has been one of her two best friends since coming to Sunnydale. In ways, it makes sense.
_____________
That's a good point. It's also worth nothing I think that Xander is more important to the mission than Dawn is. Xander is command central while Dawn just seems to be a decent fighter and one who can shout orders at people for whatever reason. But, also, Riley was an immediate danger and right in front of her, so, it's not exactly the same.

Oh, and I don't really see why everyone is so supportive of Buffy wanting to help the solider people as well.
Besides it maybe being about having prisoners and therefore leverage with Twilight -- which, I don't really get if this is the case -- it's just stupid.
This is war. Those soldiers were there to kill the Slayers not named Buffy. (I assume they weren't supposed to kill Buffy). Yet Buffy wants to risk her Slayers helping them?
I had no problem with them fighting and killing humans since if they didn't, they'd be killed. And they are arguably more important than the soldiers.

I'm just getting some distance from this. I have to do that, and then read it again. I'm not sure how I feel about it. It's clearly better than #29 (though, every episode/issue of BtVS that has ever been aired/released is), and the ending is very exciting, but I'm not sure if it makes up for what happened before, or, rather, if it can justify how they got to this point in the story.

I thought this was an ok issue. Small things like where was the baby had been answered.
I wasn't really shocked that Riley was Buffy's inside guy, it makes me wonder if him and Buffy have a thing though since she was dressed up so nice when she was going to meet him a past issue. I would like it if they did restart their relationship because I like Dawn and Xander being together and I don't want him with Buffy. I did though like the moment when Buffy was so happy to see Xander and practically wouldn't let him go, it seemed to make Dawn really jealous by the way she was trying to get Buffy's attention.

At first reading I thought the issue was big time plain and boring however after reading it again and really looking at it as I read it I loved it! I think because the story was so all over the place like it kept going to one scene to another it made it seem busy and un focused but I guess that's what war is.
I loved the art work it was fort he first time I feel spot on with the emotions and the likes.
The Riley deal was easily predicted! The gods turning on them and not giving them their powers I must have been having a very blonde moment to be shocked by that!
I reallllly wanted Buffy and Xander to get it on!! I liked that when she was hugging him after she left her hand on his face when giving orders, and his face looking at her awwh cute!
I was so confused by the ending at first but after reading it again I get it well as much as you can.

I'm confused now... I really don't know what to think. I feel like I've been confused since the beginning of Season 8.
Now I really don't see the point of Tibet in the overall storyline. Besides the bloodbath.
And Buffy flying?? Really??
Nothing surprising about the Riley twist. Everybody saw it coming.
I think we have reached a point where we need to be given more. We need to be rewarded for buying 30 issues already!!! So far, so disappointing. Just my opinion.

Not mine I believe we have been rewarded with amazing storylines all along, with the Retreat arc a return to form. Even Predators and Prey I dd not find so bad, even if not as captivating and thought provoking. I go with the flow and enjoy the imagination of the authors. And being inured by "Veronica Mars" I don't even mind waiting for the Twilight reveal. But then again, I never minded waiting for the moment when we were allowed to unpack our christmas presents. I am one to wallow in anticipation, and I can do that for a long time. ;D

Here is a little overview I made for the episode. I will be making them all now for the whole season, but thought I should just place this in this particular thread because:
A) It contains spoilers on the comic. Which everyone in here, by now, has read. B) It is based on this certain issue.
I hope you enjoy it, feedback would be lovely!!

I'm eager to find out how the season comes out, but I'm not eager to have no more Buffy comics to look forward to every month. The climax of the season will be like Christmas ;D -- but Christmas is then followed by December 26.

So then it's NOT coincidence that Willow one-shot comes out December 23rd?

Dec 22/23 is the winter solstice, if I remember correctly, which means it's a pagan holiday! So no... perhaps it all isn't a coincidence.

Actually I think Dark Horse would have preferred to get the issue out in early December on schedule... but Joss was working on the one-shot and #31 at the same time, was late with the scripts, and handed them in at the same time, which is why we get two issues just two weeks apart.

Such realism has no place in the Buffyverse. I was aware of the real-world situation, but it's a lot more interesting to play the coincidence game. I'm just happy that we don't have to wait longer to get #31... that would utterly suck.
