Watched the first one.. and was really confused. The language got away from me a bit! but now a friend explained it to me and it sounds pretty cool... once you understand it! So I'm going to keep watching I think! I haven't heard anything bad about it yet!

I somehow missed this thread last summer, but I guess that means enough time's passed to give you the chance to finish the entire series. So, did you stick with it and watch all 3 seasons? I kept hearing how great it was, so decided to check the first season out from the library and give it a shot. The first episode didn't really grab me, and the second one was worse--I nearly stopped watching right there. Man, am I glad I didn't! I stuck with it, and it ended up being one of my favorite shows ever. It had to have one of the best all-around casts I've ever seen in anything (except Timothy Olyphant, who's mediocre when he's playing calm, and laughable when he tries to play angry). The language--not the swearing, but the general manner of speaking--challenge you almost the way Shakespeare does, and the plotlines are so layered that you really have to pay attention and try to keep up. Too many other shows and movies these days are so simple and predictable that you can be half-asleep and still follow what's going on. It's amazing to see Keith Carradine in other things (like "Dollhouse") now, because he's so different than he was playing Bill Hickok...

I just finished watching this show all the way through (I had seen a few episodes here and there before)... and it was one of the greatest shows I've ever watched. The cast was perfect and the writing was brilliant all the way through. I got to the final episode and was seriously disheartened that it had been canceled (shame on HBO for doing this, and Carnivale, such injustice). I have no qualms adding this show to my Top 10 list. It was just that good. And El D, I disagree with you about Timothy Olyphant. I thought he was fantastic on the show. I had been a fan of him for a while before though (his new show, Justified, is off to a great start). I found Bullock to be a fascinating character, who really broke the mold on the typical Western Sheriff. The writing is of course a reason for that, but I thought Timothy really made the character his own. Watching Bullock switch from a quiet gentleman to an absolute maniac never got old. I don't even really need to mention Ian McShane, but his acting on the show was arguably some of the best I've ever seen, in any medium. He stole every single scene he was in, and I can't believe he didn't win three Emmy's for the role. William Sanderson was also a favorite as E. B. Farnum. Just a genius character as well. Oh and Brad Dourif. BRILLIANT work as Doc Cochran. I only wish he had been more prominent after Season 1. I'm just about ready to turn around and watch the show again, especially now that I know each character well. I wish this would get a Blu-Ray release ASAP! Watched the first one.. and was really confused. The language got away from me a bit! but now a friend explained it to me and it sounds pretty cool... once you understand it! So I'm going to keep watching I think! I haven't heard anything bad about it yet! That happened to me a few times as well. I found that I'd get so caught up just watching these characters do their thing that I'd forget wtf they were even talking about. So I'd have to go back and re-watch a few scenes. I found that only happened a lot in Season 1 though, where the story lines meander a bit. Season 2 and 3 have much tighter plots. I'd be interested to know if you kept up with the show and finished it!

Deadwood ranks as the best non Whedonverse show ever IMO (The Wire was close) - and Al Swearengen the greatest Anti Hero. I guess it's a matter of taste though.

I've been meaning to watch Deadwood for a while now. Maybe I'll finally get around to it this year.

I've been meaning to watch Deadwood for a while now. Maybe I'll finally get around to it this year. I highly recommend it. The swearing is bad, there's no way around that, but it seems appropriate for the era they are portraying and once you be accustomed to the style of language it is very entertaining.
