I heard about this a while ago due to a interview with steven about Dollhouse and he mentioned how he couldn't stay on board as hes off to develope Spatacus.
he mentioned hes (obviously) from the Whedon camp so therell be big sprawling storyarcs etc.
Yay! I love me some epic story arcs.

I finished the first season on Netflix... which is cool, since I don't have Starz. Anyway, first few eps were kinda rough, but once we got to the Pits... everything began falling into place. Batiatus' scheme in the latter chunk of the season was pretty much perfection, ratcheting up the suspense until the very last second. The finale paid off quite handsomely, and I will say that this show has become my favorite show of the year (since V has failed to impress, and Glee is currently on some kinda slump for me... or maybe it's because a 4 month break is too long to rekindle the fluffy magic it once had). Can't wait to see what else they cook up for the second season, which as I understand it, is currently on hold because Andy Whitfield (Spartacus) is undergoing treatment for cancer.

Oh snap. I didn't know there was a thread for Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Awesome! Like Xi, I also just got done watching the first season (Starz, OnDemand). This show has been pretty cool, I've looked forward to a new episode every week until the finale. Not gonna lie, it was pretty ace. I agree, Xi. Batiatus' plan to set up Solonius was pretty darn clever. I never saw it coming. The season finale was pretty superb. I'm glad Ilithyia didn't die in the finale as she is a great villain. Hopefully we'll see more of her in season two. My prayers go out to Andy Whitfield.

It seems like everyone that stuck with the series really ended up enjoying the first season...and I'm one of them. After the first two episodes or so (which were 100% weaksauce), the show really improved. The actors got adjusted to their roles, the writing flourished, the drama intensified each week and the show found it's own style (away from Gladiator and 300).
Overall, an excellent first season and I hope Andy Whitfield does well with his treatment.

Once the plot begins to thicken, and more and more agendas come into play, and the characters starts interacting more, it gets a LOT better. A lot of the characters become a lot more complex as the season plays on, and goddamn, if Lucretia isn't awfully awesome, I don't know who is. Her machinations on the side rival her husband's more physical doings, and both Lucy Lawless and John Hannah play off each other so well that their relationship is thoroughly believable. Lucretia may be screwing Crixus, but there is never any doubt of her love for her husband. And Batiatus is fully aware of his wife's indiscretions, and yet loves her and respects her.
The thing I really love is that women aren't just window dressing. They're not just lovers, wives, whores, etc. They are fully realized characters, each with their own agendas, desires, flaws, etc. In short, they're really interesting, and don't merely serve as costumed props.

A tiny little peeve... I'm pretty sure the Gauls didn't practice circumcision... and Crixus... well, the guy is lacking something down there... Minor historical peeve, that's all.

Well, that's good to hear. I heard that there was going to be prequel story a while back, so I'm glad to see it moving forward. Also nice to know that Whitfield is responding well to his treatments.

Well, apparently Andy Whitfield has beaten cancer, and is "raring to go" onto S2. SOURCE.

Apparently Andy has to resume cancer treatment and will be unable to work on Season 2 of Spartacus. Hopefully his prognosis is still positive, and that he gets better. I wonder what will happen with the show now? Click here. They only have a few choices really: Delay the show, film another spin-off mini-series, recast Andy or end the show. I hope they will continue working on the show, or delay it until Andy recovers. I'd love more prequel stories like the upcoming one with Batiatus and Lucretia (maybe one about Doctore?).

That does stink. I'm sorry that he has to undergo treatment again, but hey, personal health over television sounds like alright prioritizing.

I just heard that Starz has chosen to re-cast Spartacus. I wish they would just wait but thats selfish of me. I guess Andy W needs the time to focus on himself and his treatment and that is the important part!
