I just wrote this question out because I think that this is a pretty accurate commentary on the whole Cordelia situation. This video can be seen at this url: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_igTbXKPck
This was a question asked by a really cool Buffy fan at Dragon Con to Charisma Carpenter:
"I actually watched all of Buffy and thought that Willow was my favorite character, untill I watched Buffy and Angel together and I realized that Cordelia was my absolute favorite character. I think there was two reasons for that. I think Cordelia had a wit that nobody else could quite capture. I think that in the 5th season of Angel, when they decided to do what they did with Cordelia, the energy changed, and it didn't change in a positive way. I mean I applaud what they did with Spike and bringing him over and trying him as a subsitute Cordelia, but ya know...I'm curious, I know that a lot of times Joss will collaborate with the actors as far as when he's building a story arc or bulding the characters. I'm curious about what you felt about the transition from Buffy to Angel to being off the show. I just felt that the was that Cordelia was cut out of the show was just really weak and I wonder how you felt about it as an actor."
She explains the whole thing, and I could type it out but I think it might take a half an hour. Maybe later...maybe now...Anyway I'll post this and you guys can talk about it. I agree with what this fan said. They gave a crappy ending to a great character. She just dies and thats it? One episode? I was slightly annoyed with that. It was definately anti-climactic...
Anyway, what are your thoughts guys?
EDIT! Sat down and wrote out what Charisma said! Woot for it only taking me an hour! Gah, so worth it though.
This is Charisma's Response to what the guy said:
"Well I think what happened, my relationship with Joss became strained, particularly because we all go through our stuff. And I was going through my stuff and then I became pregnant and Joss had obviously different way of seeing the season go in the fourth season. It was actually my least favorite season, I did not understand the relationship with Connor, I mean he's a fine actor and everything....I think honestly that Joss was mad. But I say that in a loving way. You know, its a very complicated dynamic working for somebody for so many years and expectations and, being on a show for 8 years, you're living your life as well, and living your life gets in the way of the creators expectations, and that becomes conflict. Without getting into details, we are in a better space now, I could definately work with him again. I remember, the box set is coming out and we did the commentary for that and that was...well anyway, at that meeting Joss and I had a moment and he talked about doing the Dr. Horrible stuff. And I thought he had a master plan in keeping the studio out of stuff so he would have more creative control because when he does have creative control, he really goes the distance. And I think that he wanted to get away what he wanted to get away from all that stuff and I thought that he wanted me to be a part of those things and maybe in the future but it was great because I said 'Do you want to work with me again.' and he said 'Well do you want to work with me again.' And I said yeah, but at the time it was a very strained experience. When I found out that I was going to die, I mean I didn't know that I was going to be in the 5th season. I did not know, and I found out in a horrible way. And then I found out that James was going to be in the 5th season, which makes sense. I never got a phone call from anybody, I actually found out by someone in the press telling me. But anyway the 100th episode came by and they wanted me to be in it, and I didn't want to come back because of how that all went down. I didn't feel good about it. But I knew that you, the fans, needed closure, so I decided to do it. But I was very concerned about it. And I said "I don't just want to go back to die." So we decided all this other stuff and I signed the dotted line, then I found out that they were going to kill me, and I started crying. I had this conversation with Jeffery Bell and I was working on another project that was on the same lot as WhedonWorld or BuffyWorld, and he said to me 'Listen, I have this really difficult thing I need to tell you, but I know we said that you weren't going to die, but you're gonna die.' And I started bawling and I said 'I knew that you were going to do this to me, why did I agree to this?' and I felt totally betrayed. And I said "Well, let me hear the story" and he said "Its special." and I said 'Well let me hear it.' and I heard it and i was like, 'Ugh, Joss is good. He is just so good.' and thats the story, and it sucks that I died but I thought it was a hell of a way to go."
