I just posted an extended essay over on the Slay Alive blog. Read it here: slayalive.com/blog/2009/09/14/what-we-bring-to-fiction-joss-whedons-angel-in-my-life/ It's probably the nerdiest thing I've ever written. Funny thing is, it's also the most personal. Feel free to write your own reflections on what it means to be a fan of any fictional work below. I don't think there is really a thread for this, and it's pretty cool and kinda shocked to sit back and realize how much any work of art has changed your life.

That was fantastic Pat. I obviously agree and empathize with everything, because Angel is my favorite TV show and work of fiction as well. Plus we all know I am obsessed with Wesley.
Great work and I didn't know the bit about watching Angel for the first time with your grandmother, I can only imagine the effect that had on your first viewing.

That was a deeply touching piece of writing, Pat. I agree with you in saying that finding someone in person who shares your love of a work of fiction is a wonderful experience. I doubt that my love of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" would be quite as powerful as it is if I hadn't experienced the whole thing with my sister and become closer to her as a result.
One thing that interested me particularly was when you contrast the smaller, but dedicated, fanbase like the one that exists for 'Angel' with the much larger phenomenon of "Harry Potter". Do you think that part of the reason you connect so much with the fanbase, and perhaps the show itself, is because the following is smaller, and hence more exclusive?

Definitely, gumgnome. With a fandom as medium-sized as ours (somewhere between Harry Potter and, say, Charmed), we have enough people that there is always conversation, but not too many that you can't make personal connections with fans. It's really a special thing.

Ahahah yeah, I was thinking the same. The blog looks so lonely, and all the comments are here.
