I asked Scott and he said he'd be down for it.
So, post your questions in here, and hopefully Scott will answer 'em!
Mods, can you make this a sticky?
Here are mine:
1. Smashed: Scott, If you had the power to do so, would you have Tara come back?
Scott: Not gonna answer about Tara lest one group of shippers or another declare war and Emmie has to rush to my rescue again.
2. Smashed: How do the letters in the "Slay the Critics" section get chosen?
Scott: I used to select the letters, but now it's either Sierra or Ryan Jorgensen doing it. We run almost all letters, eliminating only those which we find to be insulting to our writers or artists. Although we will run criticism of our talent, if we feel it's fair or well said. We run almost no snail mail, because we get so much email, so it's not worth typing something up that came in by post.
3. Smashed: Will we find out who "The Prince" is? (Mentioned in issue 10)
Scott: No comment on the Prince.
4. Kingofcretins: Brian Lynch tells a story about how, when a fan had correctly guessed a major "Angel" plot development, he and Franco Urru put up fake artwork to throw fans off the scent. Do you or Joss ever read discussion threads here or elsewhere? Have any fans come up with theories that are pretty much exactly right but don't know it yet? Do you think you would want to do the same thing, release pencil sketches or something that lead away from that speculation?
Scott: I only read discussion threads if I'm directed to them for some reason, like the thread saying I hated Spike, etc. I have seen one thread here that guessed correctly at something coming. I don't think we'd go to the trouble of hoaxing to distract you, although maybe we'd change what we were doing if it were really ruined.
5. Kingofcretins: In the letter column of 8.16, you gently let down the people who were hoping for a Marcie Ross appearance in Season 8. If you would, take this opportunity to tell the fans out there something that you know *won't* happen before or during 8.40 (i.e. a character return/resurrection), but something you've actually been asked about that doesn't give away the actual plot at all. A "negative" spoiler, if you like.
Scott: I'm so anti-spoiler I wouldn't want to give you a negative spoiler as that would still be telling.
6. Kingofcretins: Leaving aside the feedback you got for Buffy/Satsu, what do you think has been the most negative/unfair criticism, and, alternately, the most valid criticism of the Season so far?
Scott: Well, all criticism's fair, in a sense. The one I disagree with the most is negative feedback on Georges' likenesses. I think it's flat out wrong. His likenesses are beyond great. They're not as photographic as Jo's, but she's doing painted, single-image pics. We've had artists whose drawings have looked more like photos than Georges' do, but they don't have the life, or the acting that his do. Georges draws the book exactly as we want it drawn, and I love his likenesses. I'm surprised at the criticism when I hear it. Most valid criticism? I honestly can't remember. Let me think ...
7. Kingofcretins: You're not the editor of Dark Horse, you're a Buffy fan -- what, if any, new comic projects or spinoffs would you want to see set in the Buffyverse?
Scott: Frankly, I would love to see a Giles & Faith spinoff; they were two of my favorites on the series, I regretted not doing more with both of them during my old run of books, and I think their new career makes for a great occult adventure setting. You can do anything with that traveling occult detective thing. (That's basically the gyst of Solomon Kane, he plugged.)
8. Joe: So I heard that Faith and Giles are returning soon. And we also know that Oz is popping up after an arc or so. Is there ever going to be a time where the gangs all there? (Buffy, Xander, Willow, Dawn, Giles, Oz, Faith, Kennedy)
Scott: No spoiler.
9. Whedon Fan: Will we get another stand alone issue with the Decoy slayer that we saw in Angel season five? She was in Rome with The Immortal and mentioned in issue one.
Scott: Return of the Decoy Slayer? Almost certainly not. Does that count as a negative spoiler?
10. Whedon Fan: Will we ever get the chance for a Jo Chen pull out Buffy poster in an issue...we got one in After The Fall and it made me wonder?
Scott: I don't think we'd do a pullout poster for Jo, but hopefully more convention posters and retailer incentive posters.
11. Whedon Fan: Will The Immortal make an apperance at all in season 8. I heard that orignially Joss planned season 8 with him in it dating Buffy but it didn't feel right so he went back to the Buffy basic..."feeling alone"
Scott: I don't believe the Immortal ever was or will be a part of Season Eight.
12. Whedon Fan: Marti Noxon and Jane Espenson!! Will they ever right an issue...aside from Joss they were my favourite Buffy writers?
Scott: Jane yes; Marti, no plans, but man would I love it. Maybe Season Nine, god willing.
13. El Diablo Robotico: This'll probably be rejected for being too spoiler-y, but since you revealed that Faith and Giles will be back eventually, and we've heard that Oz will be returning, can you say whether or not we'll see Satsu again? "Wolves at the Gate" turned me into a real fan of both her and Renee ("A Beautiful Sunset" also helped, in Satsu's case), and by the end of it they were both gone from the story, which made me .
Scott: We'll see Satsu again soon.
14. bamph: Out of the completed arcs and standalone issues that have been released.......
The Long Way Home,
The Chain,
No Future For You,
Anywhere But Here
A Beautiful Sunset
Wolves At The Gate
....which one is your personal favorite as a fan?
Scott: My fave story so far is Anywhere but Here, because it made me cry (awwwwww).
15. bamph: Was there any writer you were surprised that Joss was able to get to write for season 8? For me it was Brad Meltzer.
Scott: Yes and no. I'm not surprised to see writers wanting to collaborate with Joss, but there was a little surprise that we'd be getting these comics writers, BKV, Loeb, and Meltzer into the mix. But I knew they were pals with Joss, and why wouldn't they do this?
16. bamph: It's probably a little early for this question but in regards to season 9,do you see that continuing with the current numbering or when season 8 ends at issue 40, it ends and season 9 will start with a new issue #1?
Scott: Season Nine=New #1.
17. bamph: Are you reading Joss's canon Angel Season 6 series at IDW, After The Fall? As a fan, what do you think of some of the developments in them such as L.A. being in hell with the rest of the world thinking everything is fine, Angel now being human, Gunn a vampire and a major villain, Wes a ghost, the whole Illyria/Fred deal, the friendship between Spike and Connor, the presence of slayers in L.A. being used as training for Gunn and his vamp gang and some of the other events in the story?
Scott: No comment on the Angel stuff. Not in the mood to go there, sorry, except to say that I wish we had not let it go, and I regret my own role in that.
18. bamph: Why did Dark Horse let the Angel license go but keep the Buffy license and how did Joss feel about that when it happened and how does he now presently feel with the Buffyverse split and running at two companies?
Scott: (repeat) No comment on the Angel stuff. Not in the mood to go there, sorry, except to say that I wish we had not let it go, and I regret my own role in that.
19. bamph: You've said in the past I believe that Dark Horse can use whoever they want from the verse. It's all owned by Fox.Does that work both ways? Can IDW use whoever they want as well if they and Joss feel it's necessary? And do both companies have to notify the other when one of there licensed characters are used by the other? For example, the Angel/Buffy/Spike threesome scene in issue 3 or what you hinted in the issue 15 letter page?
Scott: (repeat) No comment on the Angel stuff. Not in the mood to go there, sorry, except to say that I wish we had not let it go, and I regret my own role in that.
20. eriktheslayerboy: Is Kennedy going to be staying around for the rest of the season or at least not die? Is Kennedy going to play a important role?
Scott: All I say about Kennedy is that she'll be heavily involved in the Fray arc.
And this is gonna sound fake, but it's not that I can't think of any FAIR negative criticism ... I'm just not remembering much of it at all. Characters that should be included or not included, Joss writing his characters out of character ... those are the ones I remember, and I don't agree with them, and in some sense don't think the former is even relevant criticism—one must critique the piece for what it is, not what it could be under a different writer.
21. brandonr: How much is Season 9 planned out so far? Just general stuff, or more solid arc details?
Scott: Season Nine—only generally planned.
22. brandonr: If you could be any character in the 'verse, who would you be and why?
Scott: And I'd be Twilight. Bhwah hahahahah!
23. Smashed: Ooh, will we ever see any more of the unreleased tarot cards?
Scott: Nothing. Sorry. So sad, so bad.
Lost Question asked by Mikey, probably about a gay character coming out.
Scott: I don't know about Andrew coming out. In a way I think he should; in another I'd love to see him surprised that anyone thought he was gay, and tell them to stop subscribing to stereotypes.
24. Kingofcretins: Scott, the famous exchange we learned about months ago between Joss and Georges was (obviously, now) about Buffy/Satsu, that Georges told Joss "he can't do that" and Joss said "yes I can and you'll see how I can".
As editor, I of course assume that you wouldn't actually want to publish any storyline you don't believe in, whether it's Joss' book or anyone else's. But have there been any plot developments in Season 8, past or future, that ever made or make you anxious, that they might backfire, that the audience would actually reject or is too much to ask of them? Any of those "moments of doubt" like Georges admitted to having?
Scott: The only time I got anxious was with the Satsu thing, but it wasn't about the fans, it was Fox. We were having a marketing meeting, trying to decide how to handle it—a debate I'm sure you all would have loved to have a vote in. I said something about approval from Fox, and Sierra suddenly realized she was months behind sending scripts to Fox for approval. We sort of consider that a formality, as we know they're happy to have Joss doing his thing with the character. But it occurred to me that if they were ever going to raise their hand, it may be over our giving one of their best characters a lesbian experience. The book was already drawn at this point, and I really sort of lost it. We still laugh about how extreme my reaction was. That was the only time I worried about someone else's reaction. I loved it when Joss told me Buffy was going to hook up with Satsu. It made total sense, and the more I thought about it, the more in character I knew it to be. And I knew there'd be a negative reaction from a segment of the fanbase, but you can't please everyone, and if you try, you tell shitty stories.
25. El Diablo Robotico: Something from Joss's MTV interview from last week wasn't totally clear to me. We already knew Jane Espenson is writing a standalone in the #21-25 range, but Joss mentioned she's also writing an "arc" featuring Oz. So is she the one who's going to be filling that previously empty slot from #26-30, and will that be the Oz arc? And I know we were supposed to limit ourselves to one question, but this is a quick one: will the last 15 issues be 3 5-part arcs, with no standalones?
Scott: Jane Espenson has written #21, and just in the last week or so agreed to write #26-30, which will feature Oz prominently. There may or may not be standalones in the last fifteen issues. I sort of think there won't be room for them.
26. themaleslayer: Will Xander find love again sometime soon?
Scott: First, no spoilers about love of any kind, about Dawn's arc, whether or not there'll be a Season Ten, or appearances of Anya, Tara, or anyone else Joss hasn't already said.
27. faith0tvs: Will the fans be blown away with surprise by the end of season 8 or to be more accurate with events that lead or happpen in the end of season 8?
Scott: The end of this series will blow you away so much that you'll burn your Beatles records.
28. vampmogs: Will Dawn's plot have any great significance to the season's overall arc? Or is it very much just Dawn related?
Scott: (missed answer)
29. Kingofcretins: with Buffy/Satsu's reveal in the rearview mirror, do you think that any of the storylines still to be revealed in Season 8 have a chance to set off as explosive a reaction in the fanbase? And as a side question, do you think fans react more intensely to romantic storylines or general plot developments?
Scott: Some upcoming details will be more explosive than Satsu-Buffy was with fans, but not as explosive with ABC.com.
From personal experience, I would have to say Buffy fans react more wildly to romantic issues than anything else.
30. Skytteflickan88: What is the most annoying q&a question you've ever gotten?
Scott: None of these questions have been very annoying.
31. Skytteflickan88: Will season 9 be shorter than season 8?
Scott: Currently I'd say Season Nine will be shorter than Season Eight, but too soon to tell. At this point in S8 (that is, before we started it, and even into the first four scripts) we thought it was gonna be 22 issues. (Whedonfan: It was Joss who had Season Eight at twenty-two issues.)
32. Rachster: I just have one and it's a bit stupid but, is there any chance that we will see Anya? even as a ghost, or in a dream?
Scott: (missed answer)
33. sire: This is probably way too early to answer, but I was just wondering if you and Dark Horse had any plans to release the entire Season 8 in one or two hardcover editions when it's all said and done?
Scott: We've talked about deluxe editions for Season Eight, and got close to putting one on the schedule, but right now there are no definite plans.
34. pablo: Now that Buffy is strongly reaffirming itself as a popular and followed fanbase, are there any talks for some more Buffy-related projects?
Maybe not tv, but tv-movies, spin-off comic series (like the Faith spinoff that was never made), videogames, new action figure line (just look at the amazing job PopCo has done for the Harry Potter line!), new books?
The franchise is re-living its heydays, now that fans have proved to be faithful and to look forward to new stories, it would be a shame not to exploit these new resources and interest to expand the adventures and stories of the Scoobies and their universe.
Scott: (missed answer)
