Your Illyria is incredible, really. I've been looking through your customs and you seriously deserve major kudos for them.

I think the point is to get people to read Fray, if they haven't already. But as far as the dialogue goes, I really don't understand what the hubbub is. There's always enough context for you to figure out most of it, and if there were words that didn't quite make sense, Buffy provided a mini-glossary when she goes through the meanings of some of the more common words. True, especially considering that now more than ever, Fray has been established as a definite, full-on canon, and even essential part of the current Buffyverse. If you're reading season eight, why not take the time to read Fray?

Because, and this has been suggested at least a few time before, the mask may serve as more than just a shroud to conceal Twilight's identity. Because Twilight's only ever been seen out and about at well, twilight. I'm not saying that this is the reason, but it is a possible one; that Twilight's somewhat nocturnal because he has to be. And for another reason, showing us a face immediately takes away the allure of mystery, and quite possibly humanizes Twilight. Keeping him a mystery allows him to remain an icon, rather than a person. He could very well be someone we already know from the past, or future, but don't discount the practical purposes of the mask either. Exactly. The thing I find most interesting about his mask is the way it covers every single bit of his skin--it doesn't even have any eyeholes. (At first I was thinking that if he were some version of Xander, the lack of eyeholes could be intended to conceal the fact that one eye is missing.) Also, if you go back to his fight with Buffy in #11, you can see that not only is he wearing gloves, but his forearms are completely wrapped, too, at least up to the elbows, and maybe beyond. This guy doesn't appear to want his skin exposed at all to the wrong conditions. The obvious conclusion is "vampire", protecting himself from the sunlight, but it could also be that he's some new type of creature we haven't seen before. Something nocturnal, like xi said, but not necessarily a vampire... The fact that every "known" character on the suspects-list for Twilight (Riley, Caleb, Angel, Spike, Ethan, Xander, Giles, Andrew, the Immortal, Oz's cousin Jordy) has a "Yeah, but..." attached has me leaning toward it being someone we've never seen before. The missile attack in the last issue probably kills any possibility that he's a "good guy" doing what he's doing for a higher purpose, so if we scratch Riley, Angel, Spike, Xander, and Giles off the list, we're left with a very limited pool to choose from, all of whom have problems. Great theory, and something I've been thinking about as well. This guy wants not one inch of skin exposed. I've given up on trying to discover who/what Twilight is, and Allie himself said we don't have enough pieces of the puzzle, if I remember correctly. The "I just hate to see you cry" line in no way means that Twilight must be someone that Buffy knows. This guy has had Buffy on large screens for Hecate knows how long ("I know that move, slayer."), and like most Whedon's villains, he's become exceptionally focused on her in more than just your typical "muahaha! i shall end you!" way - The First liking specifically to be Buffy while in Caleb's presence, The Mayor's insights into Buffy's relationship with Angel, The Master's prophecy, Adam's plans to have Buffy be a part of the Maggie's "final solution"... All that line shows is the Twilight really has it in for the girl. My problem with the Riley theory is that Twilight has not said anything that I could attribute to being something Riley, no matter how twisted, would say. I do think we'll see him again soon though. Riley, that is. The prince maybe? Buffy being Queen of an organization - as in having central command, and Riley being the Prince, a secondary commander and heir to a figurative government organization "throne". I spent some time thinking maybe it could be Future Angel, but that really is as ridiculous as it sounds. Mostly it came from the line, "The chosen one. Always in pain...and always complaining." It gave me an instant flashback to the "No friends, no hope" speech in Becoming Part II. I can't imagine it being Angelus, because Angelus is just not the cover up behind the mask kinda of guy at all, but for a moment Future Angel did make some idiotic sense in my head. The Caleb theory I don't have much a problem with because that's the only person to have said things remotely similar to Twilight's lines in the past couple of issues. ("Understand this girl, you cannot fight me." and "Just like a girl.") The Hank theory has a definite creep factor, but wouldn't be a rewarding reveal at all, unless the character was to be reintroduced soon and built up from the small pieces we already have on him. Mostly, though I'm letting it play out on my faith in Joss, I stand by my opinion that it's a new villain, twisted and very interested in Buffy. Twilight's far too awesome to be just your average good guy gone bad and now hiding behind a mask until an inevitable reveal (whether to the audience or not). It wouldn't be far from what Whedon has done in the past with the teasing, fake-outs, and all. He could have an extensive character history in the works already.

Buffy/Xander in a romance would be this completely natural character evolution with absolutely none of this inexplicable and imaginary incest -- we know they've been deliberately written with subtext throughout, and they were a few episodes away from actually being a thing in Season 7 before the plan was scrapped, and the subtext was heavy, so... incest? Heh? Xander/Dawn would work. It actually *would* have to change the dynamic, but the groundwork is being laid to do exactly that, and if its done slowly and deliberately enough, it shouldn't be a problem. Ditto King. Both would work, and though I've never been into Bander particularly, season eight has definitely turned me on to the idea, and some of their scenes together throughout the series' entirety, have certainly provided enough subtext. The scene between them before Buffy is shot in season six is quite beautiful. As for Dawn/Xander, it'd certainly work given the current subtext and the way Joss has been molding season eight, but it's really something I'd really like to not see. I'm just not that convinced about it being a hook up, and that's exactly what Xander is apparently going to get. Not to mention it does have an uncomfortable factor to it. Xander has grown into a more paternal figure, IMO, rather than fraternal when it comes to Dawn...or at least the cool uncle type, you know? Either way, it's still a bit iffy.

I agree with Emmie, we have no proof that this issue won't be furthering the story in some way. Just because the story is a flashback, it could still have a lot of relevance to the main story. May be similar to LOST's flashbacks in that sense. That's what I thought when I read the blurb and saw the cover. I doubt this won't have some, however minor, relevance to the main arc.

Great theories, wenxina and King.
I'll definitely have an emotional reaction to Fray's death if it does come to pass in Time of Your Life. Whedon has built her up to be such a great character, and giving her the axe would really be very common for him. I still stand by my opinion that she deserves at least another couple of issues in her own verse before she's killed off.
It does however make perfect sense that Fray would have to die, probably even at Buffy's own hand, for Buffy to have the motivation to change the present.
Really can't wait to see how it all goes down.
