Sad, very sad and scared. My girlfriend's sister is suddenly in extremely bad health. This autumn was so good, but that message the day before yesterday changed everything. Life is so fragile, folks.

Thank you all for your input! Actually it would not be completely legal not to grade her, because she did take the course so she should also get a grade. Although individually, of course, I would be able to sign her off. This, however, would be a rather problematic precedent: You fail, you don't get a grade, cause we're oh so nice. It's a question of being responsible for your actions. Does this answer your question, drucillacakes?
We (the board of the PhD-program) decided that we will try to convince her to make the adaptations to her paper. Let's see whether somebody who is not me is able to do that.
And since yesterday I was informed that the sister of my girlfriend has a rather aggressive breast cancer somehow this problem was decimiated in its importance.
Again, thanks you all, it is very helpful to get your feedback.

Hey there EWR -- and also Elenasaur! -- , thank you for responding so fast. I polished the translation a bit, it was rather bumpy, I admit, so thank you for pointing that out! Actually she is being paid for writing her PhD and attending these seminars (such as mine) and she wants me not to grade her because she does not want to get a negative grade. But only when grading her I get paid for the work I invested in her paper. OK, don't want to sound too whiny Thanks again!

OK, so here I am again, and I will again rely on your patience and wisdom. Said student has now that the deadline for handing in the final version of her paper has passed sent me the following message (which was in German, this is a translation): Dear Rosie, I totally forgot to tell you that I decided that I will not invest any more time to revise the seminar paper. Maybe the reason for this (my forgetting) is that I do not know how to tell you this without there being "bad blood" again. It is just that working on the paper does not further my PhD (your standards simply do not fit my research design) and I have so many other things to do that I am simply unable to make it this year. Should I want to publish this paper I am certainly going to consider your comments. Since I participate at more seminars than necessary I would simply ask you to ignore my participation at your seminar and accordingly not to grade me. Maybe you are happy to hear that I did learn something from you. For example, I produced an extensive definition of my central terms, I incorporated the concept of intersectionality in my research stategy and all in all I am striving to be very precise in my references! Wishing you a nice holiday! Most cordially, Audrey (this, of course, is not her real name, as Rosie isn't mine ) Those of you who have too much time on their hands: would you be so nice to comment on this letter and tell me if my furiosity (and I am furious, I feel sick to the stomach) is exaggerated? The point is: She does not want me to grade her in order to avoid not passing the seminar.

Lady Snowblood, a japanese film from 1973, clearly an inspiration for Tarantino's Kill Bill - check it out! If you liked Kill Bill, you will love Lady Snowblood!

Tired. Should I have another coffee? When shall I have the energy to return to the paper I'm currently writing (or rather: not writing)? Why did I not order Battlestar Galactica Season 3 sooner? Why will I therefore not be able to watch it during the next few days when all I have left is two episodes of season 2? This is what is up or rather not up.

Hey there, here's another question for my dearest SlayAlivers. I'm reading a master's thesis on queer theory and television (unfortunately nothing about Buffy in there) - and here is what has come up. First I'm going to have to say this annoys me. Either people don't know or people forgot that it was BTVS to show the first lesbian sex scene on broadcast television. I thinks that's worthy of being in a thesis. I can tell you, this annoys me, too, and to no end. Instead the author writes about Madonna videos from the 1980s in which conventional femininity is deconstructed, but not heterosexuality. I would have thrown the thesis back to the author.

Outofphase, may I ask where your local lgbt community is located at?
NL, thank you particularly for the link, this is just the kind of material I was looking for. I had known the term queer was contested, but I had no idea how bitter the debates are.
Looking forward to reading even more from you, this spectrum of answers I am getting is fascinating and very helpful for my further thinking.

On another note, maybe someone can help me with my own question. This may sound silly, and I am in no way trying to make fun or be offensive when I ask this: Why is it necessary to distinguish "Lesbian" from "Gay". Aren't lesbians gay? In a way they (we) are, but gay also has male connotations, so lesbian is the more specific term.
