To celebrate SPIKE:AFTER THE FALL # 2's release, let's open up the floor to any and all questions...
...spoiler-filled questions will be mocked and/or avoided, and anything about AFTERMATH will probably be met with a "man I don't know".
So let's do it, if you guys are game. One question per post, kay? My brain is an open book!
No literally, it is. It makes the shape of my head so weird.
______________________________________________________
1) jellymoff: I know you said that you would probably not be able to answer questions about Aftermath, but would you be able to give us any indication as to how the writing duties will be split up? I just hope that you are heavily involved!
Brian: Man, I don't know.
2) Wyndam: Have you finished writing A:AtF Issue #16? Any official word on if the issue will be larger than normal?
Brian: I'm a few pages into 14. And I think, I THINK that we're expanding the series to 17 issues, the last two released either a week or two weeks apart, to allow for the bigger story.
I think. I could be wrong.
3) iloveromy: Did you have an inspiration behind the She Who Shall Remain Nameless baddie in Spike #2? I know we just got to meet her and I'm sure she has a whole back story we don't know about yet, but why a Glory-type baddie?
Oh I also want to mention something that really stuck out to me. The look on the dragon's face when it sees that Spike isn't going to help with the Street Fighter 2-Lightning-Guy. The sadness and desperation really translate in that panel. If in fact that was what you were going for. If not, forget I was ever here *Poof*
Brian: Non is her name (or at least part of it, it's what people call her in the next two issues), and we learn a little more about her in the next two issues, but I didn't want to take too much time away from the leads, so she's a bit of a mystery.
Oh, and that look on Dragon's face was in the script, executed to perfection by Franco! Thanks for liking!
4) angeliclestat: So the Burning man in Spike:AtF #2 - is it Angel? And if you cannot answer...will it be revealed in a future issue?
Brian: The identity of the dude in Wolfram & Hart's HQ will absolutely be made clear, but I gotta say, I thought it was pretty clear who it was. In fact, I thought people would be annoyed Spike didn't figure it out.
5) hitnrun017: Are the woman's legs, from the issue 12 preview, a character from the show that we haven't seen in After the Fall yet?
Brian: Spoilers!
6) NileQT87: Does Spike already know that Angel is human?
Brian: If Spike knows, he never told me. That bugger.
7) Emmie: Any funny anecdotes you can share involving the creation of After the Fall? Feel free to go on and on, long stories are fun.
Brian: The weirdest one was at San Diego Comic Con, when I was signing books. I'm gonna get some of the specifics wrong:
MAN COMES UP WITH MANY ISSUES.
ME: Should I personalize them?
MAN: No, just your name.
ME: Do you enjoy the series?
MAN: No, not really.
ME: So why do you want my signature?
MAN: E-bay.
ME: Oh. Okay. What don't you like about the series?
MAN: (shrugs)
ME: I'm fine with you not liking it, but what can I change to make it more enjoyable.
MAN: Listen, I'm just trying to give you some constructive criticism.
ME: No, you're not. I'm asking you for exactly that, but you're not giving me any.
MAN: I don't know, I just don't get why we couldn't see the alley way fight.
ME: So you don't like the entire series, because we didn't see the fight?
MAN: Yeah.
ME: But you kinda did, in FIRST NIGHT, and more will be revealed down the line, maybe.
MAN: I just don't understand why I have to wait like 12 issues to find out.
ME: I didn't say you did. But don't you think the alley way fight would just be 22 pages of fighting? Is that interesting? Isn't that any other comic?
MAN: I guess, yeah.
ME: So I win and you like the comic now?
MAN: No.
I signed them, he went on his way. My biggest regret is never getting his phone number.
8) kingofcretins: Brian, there's been some discussion of whether or not Joss is going to be available to write the concluding arc of Buffy Season 8. Obviously, "After the Fall"-proper will be concluded by then. Will you, Mr. Lynch, serve if called?
Brian: Oh I think they can do better than me.
9) sla: we'll see the Angel's dragon again? (in Spike: After the fall)
Brian: Nope, not in SPIKE:ATF, but we will see him in the very next issue of ANGEL!
10) Wyndam: It sounds like the First Night HC will have many extras (like the issue 1-5 HC did), any plans to keep that going and have a bunch of extras in the 3rd HC?
Brian: I hope so, time permitting. The FIRST NIGHT ones are really cool, methinks.
11) kingofcretins: Okay -- I asked a similar question of Scott Allie, because it reflects on how much longer it takes to unfold a comic story than a televised one. Has fan response affected the actual story? Even if you can't say what, have you and/or Joss changed your mind, gone farther or less far with a subplot based on fan reaction?
(I think you probably have seen more heat on "that can't happen!" type complaints than Season 8 has, because of the very impactful Fred/Illyria storylines and Angel being -- at least at the moment -- human)
Brian: Okay, as for your question, the only thing I can think of in terms of changing to please the audience is the fact that we changed Spike's ladies' outfits quicker than we were going to. Their reveal was going to be in issue 9, but we gave them the armor and whatnot in issue 4. Plus, I think Spider shrunk a few bra sizes, no? I could be wrong.
Oh, now that I think about it, there is another plotline that was pulled because we thought people would take it the wrong way, but it's a good one, so I may save it for later.
12) sla: Brian, what's your favourite comic: everybody's dead, Angel: ATF or Spike ATF? why? (I love all of them)
Brian: Oh man, you can't ask me to pick! That is...wow.
I would say EVERYBODY'S DEAD is really personal, but the ATFs are a big accomplishment, you know? Like, when it's done, flaws and all, I will have accomplished something pretty big.
13) hitnrun017: I really love how you write for both Fred and Illyria, but which character do you prefer writing dialogue for?
Brian: Oh man, you can't ask me to pick! That is...wow.
I would say EVERYBODY'S DEAD is really personal, but the ATFs are a big accomplishment, you know? Like, when it's done, flaws and all, I will have accomplished something pretty big.
14) thomas: In "First Night Part 2," Kate makes a brief appearance and in it she's planning on using this bomb, which looked kind of big, to blow up the demon army. Since we haven't seen Kate since, is it safe to assume she sacrificed herself in doing so? Or is she still running around somewhere?
Brian: I don't know. I...don't...know.
I said that last part like Shatner.
15) faithnspike: is spike after the fall, shadow puppets and or asylum considered to be canon for the buffy/angelverse. I know after the fall is but haven’t herd anything on the others
Brian: Not sure, but I have to admit to not caring per se, on account of I don't follow the whole canon/non-canon thing as closely as some. Betta George is in both, and he seems to know people that are similar to people from ASYLUM, but that's not to say Spike does, or that ASYLUM happened. I'm the wrong person to ask, sorry.
16) curiouswolf: Do you think Tok Shinobu would join the cause of Twilight considering what happened to her father?
Brian: Isn't Twilight bad? Tok is GOOD, she's all good!
17) sla: if you could use a character of Buffy in Angel: ATF (besides Spike) you would choose to...why?
Brian: Xander because he's fun, but Faith would fit more.
Wait, maybe Giles. Yeah, let's stick Giles in hell.
18) faithnspike: I know Buffy season 8 can use any angel characters but are you able to use some of there’s as well I would love to see some minor buffy characters even from the movie show up as they would be in LA
Brian: Did you not SEE the Loan Shark?
I'm pretty sure we could, there'd just be no place for'em in this storyline.
19) platitude: First, is Urru coming back to Angel after he finishes his work on Spike?
Second, I TOTALLY was pissed when Spike didn't realize who it was. The dragon wanted him to help him! That was cute in a dragon-ish sort of way.
Brian: I think Franco is, yes. Don't quote me though.
Gotta disagree with you, Spike isn't dumb. For one thing, he doesn't know who the Dragon was hanging out with. For another, he doesn't know where everyone is (save for Illyria and Lorne). Finally, half the readers of the comic didn't know who it was, why would Spike? To sum up, Spike is smart.
20) brandonr: If you had to change Spike's hair color to anything BUT the bleach blonde or his original brown/sandy blonde, what color would it be and why?
Brian: We're running out of questions, huh?
21) cant: hi .i just want to ask what are you thinking about people who dont like (and try to make it look bad)either buffy or angel comics.sometimes ý read awful comments about how fray timeline ll change or joss doing wrong or people never die and all ways came back both series and they will only read oneof them.whats your thoughts.thanks and sorry for my english. ps: i love both series
Brian: I am truly fine with people not liking either series. Not every book is for every reader, it's okay.
22) gunsandsmoke: Do you think Angel deserves an ending?
Brian: I think he deserves a hug.
23) platitude: I know Joss has been really involved in the Buffy Season Eight comics, do you think Joss ever write any Angel?
Brian: No idea. Hopefully!
24) embers: why could Angel communicate so easily with the dragon and Spike couldn't? That surprised me....
Brian: Very good question. I'd have to say a bond was established between Angel and The Dragon very, very quickly, as seen in FIRST NIGHT (Gunn's story to be exact).
