This season is excellent, this time we have a darker theme to the season which was addictive to watch. Great line up of episodes , great character development and a new fresh big bad, finally we go even deeper to the mythology of evil, we have a god. Glory was brilliant she was a psycho drama queen, which suited her role really good. The fight scene were still good. Realistic theme of death and the whole subject of loosing close ones ( grief). The Body was magnificent, the gift was a great ending to this whole unpredictable storyline.
Character development, 10/10 Storyline. 10/10 fightscene 9/10 Thrilling 10/10 Overal 10/10
What your thoughts of this season?

Hi, great thoughts on the season. I am currently doing a rewatch of S5 myself (up to Blood Ties now). I had forgotten what a great season this is as a whole. I completely agree with your ratings and would give this season a 10 overall. ;D

Yes, I will agree it is definitely much darker than the previous season. I like the family aspect of this season the best.

^^ I totally agree, finally we have a sense of family bondage. A TEAM. I thought the mythology of evil got deeper because we have a hell god, which to me was an interesting plot, with the whole dawn storyline and Buffy has to protect her. And the whole subject with the key and Glory was really well - done , a crazy hell god wants to go home and she doesn't care how much damage she would occurred on the earths atmosphere.

Very good season. But not perfect. Buffy Vs. Dracula, Triangle, and The Weight of the World aren't so hot. And I like Dawn. People call her whiny, and she can be........but it doesn't bother me. I enjoy the Buffy/Dawn sister relationship.
Even though Buffybot is kind of funny at times, it's also a little absurd. It's kind of hard to convince friends or family to enjoy this show when moments like that occur. It's eye rolling. And also the snake in Shadow looks terrible and also when Buffy rides it, it's embarrassing to watch.
Season 5 is the last great year of the show.

I love season 5 and i thought it was the best season for Willow and Tara which makes me love it even more. It was awesome seeing my favorite couple being together from the first episode to the very last and still in love.
10/10

And also the snake in Shadow looks terrible and also when Buffy rides it, it's embarrassing to watch. I have to say, I don't really understand this sentiment. The opening credits alone are enough to make anyone understand that this show isn't going to shirk from depicting outlandish concepts and scenarios to the point of absurdity. The fact that it does it with just enough tongue in cheek is what makes it so perfectly balanced and such a treat to watch. Again, you can condemn poor special effects all you like, but it doesn't stop something from being enjoyable. If bad special effects are enough to take you away from a scene, then every film/TV show you watch is going to have a very limited shelf life.

I think this season is really well done. I think Buffy bot was genius, especially the scene when spike doesn't realize it was Buffy until their kiss.

The interaction between Willow and Anya is hilarious. Plus, Buffy simultaneously bursting into tears at every turn is funny. And I love the Buffy and Tara scenes this ep. Anytime the two of them get to share screen time together in the series is special to me. I think this this ep is a nice bit of comic relief and it certainly delivers in terms of hilarity. And I have to say I love Weight of the World. The premise of Willow exploring Buffy's inner psyche is an interesting concept. Plus, who better to do a walkabout in Buffy's brain than her best friend? I agree with you about the snake demon, though. Definitely the cheesiest demon throughout the season in my opinion. I love the Buffybot, however. I think that S5 is a really strong season overall. I love that the family dynamic is really explored this season. Plus, we get more Joyce, which I love.

I totally agree because we missed allot of Joyce in season 4 , but this season brought her back into a new light, her acting was 1st class. The death was perfection. Jocye development was splendid in this season. i think Kristine Sutherland is an brillant actress, well done Kristine Sutherland .

gumgnome, some ideas on Buffy are more outlandish and absurd than others. Did you find every single moment and every single enemy or special effect or puppet wonderful? Did you not find anything over the top or too much at times?
I love the show, but I'd be lying to myself to pretend I'm a fan of every aspect and every moment of Buffy. It doesn't have to be all or nothing, it can be that I enjoy some crazy concepts and dislike others.

It doesn't have to be all or nothing, it can be that I enjoy some crazy concepts and dislike others. It's not that I enjoy every concept of the show that is introduced. However, I don't find concepts embarassing because they're too outlandish or absurd, nor do I think that the show went too far by introducing such concepts. I remember introducing my father to the series and seeing his reaction to the first hyper-realistic robot, Ted. He initially tried to make the argument that he couldn't really buy the existence of this thing. About half way through his explanation, it dawned on him that he was trying to explain the lunacy of a super-realistic robot on a show that had already thrown vampires, preying mantis ladies, zombies etc. Surely the whole remit of this show is that anything can and will happen and to argue over the plausibility of one concept while accepting the rest seems futile and against the contract that the viewer signs with the writers. On the issue of special effects, I really don't mind weak special effects, because if I'm suitably immersed in the fiction, I can find myself being carried away by them. Similarly, and to the detriment of most of the pap that comes out in the cinema these days, if I'm not immersed in a piece of fiction, I find even the most technically impressive special effects yawn-worthy.

I'd give it an A-grade overall. A very good season, a cohesive main arc with quite a bit of character development. Not my favourite season but still a great one.

I thought the special effect were good and unique, especially the snake in shadow , i found that really excellent and finally we have a range of brutal demons. The dimension in the gift was very imaginative and the effect when the dragon swoop near Buffy/dawn and swooping into the distant were quite great. When the portal opened on the city hall and them demons crept over the window, thats very magnificent. I found Buffy special effects are better then modern TV like Doctor who.

I certainly agree with you that the creature designers went all out in S5 - the monsters look great! On the DVD intros, they really show them off to good effect.

Agree, the agrange of demons in this season was awesome, some reason i love that demon in Forever, Ghora. It was cleverly done.
