Not sure if something like this has been posted before...This is a bit random, but I was doing some cleaning the other day and stumbled upon a rough outline I made two years ago (2/11/08 to be exact) of what I would do with an 8th season of Buffy. Apparently I was learning about endospores in class, and got really bored :-) Anyway, thought it might be interesting to share and see if anyone else had ideas on how they would continue the series.
From the bits we got from Angel the series, we know the Scoobies split up to search the world for slayers. This takes place after their travels, as they've done their part to set up factions in different parts of the world to not only help slayers but also organize the fighting of evil.
So basically, Buffy and the gang (Xander, Dawn, Andrew, Faith, Wood, Kennedy, and Willow) move to Cleveland to deal with the other known Hellmouth. Meanwhile, Giles returns to England to reestablish the Watcher's Council and act as headquarters for the worldwide factions (which in turn would be led by the more senior slayers like Vi, Rona, etc). Andrew (as seen in Angel) kinda becomes a watcher in training, much to Giles' chagrin.
We get to see Xander dealing with Anya's death, as well as Buffy dealing with Spike's sacrifice. Faith's character would be explored further, as she begins her first real relationship with Wood. Willow and Kennedy are going strong. I'd kinda like to see Dawn and Andrew grow closer. Maybe not into a relationship, but at least as really good friends.
Dawn would begin to develop powers related to her being the key. While I'm on the fence about this being a lame plot device, I think it would give her character some nice development. Her power would involve jumping dimensions and even time, though she wouldn't really be able to control it.
The big bad would be a vampire (going back to basics). But this vampire was imbued with The First's power as it retreated, so it's like Caleb and the Turok-han combined.
Buffy and Xander get closer while helping each other through their grief, but Xander then falls for a new slayer, Rachelle.
In one episode, Dawn along with Andrew get transported to a grave future. They end up time jumping (think Weight of the World, but actual reality, not dreamspace) and try to pinpoint what event led to the apocalyptic future. They keep getting sent back to the final battle in Sunnydale, eventually figuring out it was Willow's spell that started everything.
As if to confirm this, Giles visits Cleveland to inform the Scoobies that some slayers have been grouping independent of the Watcher's Council and are abusing their powers. Faith volunteers to intervene. She ends up finding that the problem is worse than Giles knew, there's a whole army of evil slayers (I haven't decided exactly who banded them together yet).
About halfway through the season (trying to line up with Angel Season 5) Andrew brings Dana into the mix. They do their best to help her recuperate, but she ends up escaping and actually joins the evil slayers (though as a loose cannon, it probably won't end well). At some point toward the end of the season, we'll learn that Xander's new love interest Rachelle is actually a spy for the evil slayers.
Buffy notices her power is fading. Buffy goes through the idea of actually being a normal girl, something that hasn't seemed possible since Season 3. As long as she had the power, she couldn't turn her back on her calling. But if it's gone, she can maybe have a normal life. However, soon Faith and the other slayers are having the same problem. They still have super strength, but no one slayer is as strong as they should be.
As for Willow...around episode 12, she would attempt reaching a higher plane for answers about the spell she cast, the slayers' waning powers, and how to avoid the dire future. She confirms what Dawn discovered as well as what Beljoxes Eye told Giles and Anya last season. Bringing Buffy back fractured the slayer line...awakening all the slayers shattered it, and now the power is spread too thin. The only way to get the power back is to reestablish the slayer line.
Willow is offered to stay on the higher plane, being able to help and guide her friends from above. She would even be able to see Tara again. But Willow can't leave her friends alone, and can't leave Kennedy as she's finally been able to find happiness after losing Tara. She returns to the mortal plane.
As this is happening, Kennedy becomes reckless and goes after the Big Bad by herself. After a gruesome fight, Kennedy is actually turned into a vampire, making the first slayer vampire. Upon learning what happened, Willow obviously tries to re-ensoul Kennedy, but finds a slayer's soul cannot reside in a vampire. The battle within would end up killing Kennedy.
In the finale, they have the Big Bad vamp, slayer vamp, and army of slayers to contend with. Knowing the only way to evade the army of slayers is to rid them of their power, Willow works to reverse the spell. The catch is the world would continue with only one slayer. Buffy is prepared to give up her power as it isn't technically hers anymore anyway, and her reclaiming it by being brought back to life is what caused this chain of events.
Now if there was going to be a 9th season, I would say that after Wood dies in battle, Faith chooses to sacrifice her power, so that Buffy goes on as the slayer. But if it were to end here, I think it would be nice to let Buffy have a normal life finally (as normal as she can have), while Faith or another slayer takes up the job. Regardless, once the power is restored to one slayer, the slayer army can't do any damage. Kennedy's powers are reduced (as she's now just a vampire), allowing Willow to re-ensoul her. And a now, strength intact Buffy (or Faith) has the power to stop the Big Bad.
I'm definitely no Joss Whedon. But it's fun to think about.
