Yay!!!! Canada just won its first gold medal today - we have never won a gold medal whenever Canada has hosted the Olympics until today. Vancouver is going crazy. I hope everyone watched the opening ceremonies on Friday. We have one gold, One Silver and One Bronze so far.

I really enjoyed the opening ceremonies, especially that Peter Pan kid. I love watching the Winter Olympics, much more than the Summer Olympics. The sports are more interesting and exciting. I watched the Biathlon a lot today (Cross Country skiing + Rifle shooting), that was great.

So far I am most excited about Apolo Anton Ohno and J.R. Celski winning first and second in the short track race the first night and all of the pairs figure skating tonight. Almost all of the pairs were great. Apolo Anton Ohno is my Olympic hero. hehe

I also definitely prefer the Winter Olympics. The only events that interest me during the Summer are gymnastics and swimming, which get old fast. The Winter has more than a few I enjoy watching. Sadly haven't actually sat down and watched any yet besides some of the Opening (and that technical failure sucked), but I'll be glued during the weekdays.

I bet it's absolutely electric in Vancouver right now, right? I like figure skating and moguls best. I remember when Johnny Mosely won gold in Nagano, and I thought his tricks were so cool, and now these guys are doing insane twists and flips. It's kinda like gymnastics, but so much more difficult.

Did the judging in the Pairs Figure Skating make sense to anyone else? My mother and me were surprised and/or upset by some of the scores they gave some of the people. Last night I was happy with all three that were on the podium, but not all of the scores made sense to us and the first night was awful. Check out this cool page though: www.vancouver2010.com/

I was impressed by Lindsey Vonn's gold-medal run in the downhill. I was very un-impressed with her post-race interview. "I hurt my wrist in December, and it was killing me, and then I injured my shin last week, and it was hurting really bad on this course because it's so bumpy...", blah, blah, blah... You know what? Shut up about your damn injuries. Athletes talking about their injuries in post-game interviews never come across well. They either sound like they're making excuses for why they lost, or that they're patting themselves on the back for being all gritty and fighting thru the pain and winning in spite of all the obstacles. The announcers are very happy to go on and on about all your injuries during the event, so let them handle that for you. I don't think I'll be rooting for her in the rest of her races...

Hmm ... I didn't see the interview, but did enjoy her awesome race. And a fellow Austrian won the bronze medal, yay.
I screamed out loud when Anja Paersson flew over this last jump - it was amazing how she was trying to get control in the air but couldn't prevent herself from falling after landing anyway. Crazy. This must have been one of the hardest downhill races for the ladies in years ... really selective and even dangerous.

You know what pisses me off more? Those Hallmark moment sob stories that they like to stick in every few minutes. Save the heartwarming tripe for the Oprah interview or something... it's the bloody Olympics, not some damn sobfest story hour. Yes, I'm heartless. Oh, and congrats on the Canadian PWN-ness! That must be really cool.

I'm funny, I usually don't root for any particular country. I pick whichever of the contestants I like more. I mean, yes, Apolo Anton Ohno is from the US, but like during the figure skating I was rooting for a Canadian and Asians... I really liked the French guy too Mathieu. It doesn't matter to me. I just enjoy seeing certain sports and seeing us all strive to be the best we can be. I think it is nice that so many people root for their own country though. Here are some of my favorites so far: Apolo Anton Ohno - Short Track - USA Evan Lysacek - Men's Figure Skating - USA Alexandre Bilodeau - Freestyle Skiing - Canada Florent Amodio - Men's Figure Skating - France Johnny Weir - Men's Figure Skating - USA Aliona Savchenko/Robin Szolkowy - Pair's Figure Skating - Germany Xue Shen/Hongbo Zhao - Pair's Figure Skating - China Yuko Kavaguti/Alexander Smirnov - Pair's Figure Skating - Russia J.R. Celski - Short Track - USA Tessa Virtue/Scott Moir - Ice Dance - Canada

Save the heartwarming tripe for the Oprah interview or something... it's the bloody Olympics, not some damn sobfest story hour. Yes, I'm heartless. I'm with you there, but believe it or not, it's not nearly as bad as it used to be. A few years ago, they'd show like 2 athletes compete, then do a 5-minute feature on one. Then another 2 athletes, then a commercial. Then 1 more athlete, and another 5-minute feature. Meanwhile you're screaming at the TV: "I just wanna watch the damn event! I really don't care about the guy that broke his leg 3 years ago that thought he'd never compete again." I wish they'd just show more of the actual competition, especially beyond just the handful of medal favorites. I love seeing the people who aren't there to win a medal, but just for the thrill of being able to say that they were in the Olympics (like the luger from India). I think it's worse when the games are in Europe or Asia, because they're showing everything here in prime-time on tape-delay, anyway, and can chop the events up and show them however they want. When the games are in North America like this, they're showing most of this stuff live, so they don't really have the chance to stick too many of those "very special features" in there. And I'm already tired of seeing some of these same commercials over and over and over. I think anyone who's watched much of the Olympic coverage knows for sure by now that yes, Charlie Daniels plays a mean fiddle, and Ed "Too Tall" Jones is too tall.

And the Austrian racer again was only 4th ...

So is your not rooting for Lindsey the reason why she failed so miserably in yesterday's race? ;D I didn't want her to win, but I didn't want her to crash, either. In her post-race interview after finishing 1st in the downhill portion, she made sure to mention, "And my shin was killing me!" But I'll give her credit for not bringing up her injuries at all after the slalom, so at least she wasn't blaming the crash on not being 100%. That's progress, I suppose. And USA curling: I love curling, so this sucks. No fun at all. Wait 'til 2014, I guess. Oh, and since his comedy career has fallen on hard times, it's nice to see that Carrot Top has made the transition to successful snowboarder...

I saw an Austrian male ski-jumper last night with a pink helmet. All I could think of was Angel on the back of Wes's Harley in "First Impressions": "How come I have to wear the ladies' helmet?"

HAHA! I'm an Austrian and I don't even know which ski-jumper that is!!
Yay for the Austrian Super G racer who beat Lindsey Vonn!
Yay also for Bode Miller - his victory in the super combination was well deserved. He really is an exceptional guy.

It is interesting reading what the different networks are showing. In Canada, CTV is the official network which is a change since CBC (government run network) so there is a difference to the look and feel of it. I find they have too many breaks as well, but I like when they show the parents in the audience cheering their kids. The breaks, ads and inteviews will be different in the different countries as well. Also so sad Canada lost the hockey game. And hockey started in Canada - all our ads were saying "Let's show them who started this game" (or something like that) But - hey women's curling is going gangbusters.

I just want to say that Evan Lysacek rules! I concur!! I've watched avidly every night. I'm watching ski jumping at the moment. I've loved seeing Apolo Ohno race and I'm looking forward to the women's figure skating later this week. The finals of the ice dancing are tonight I think. My husband has sat and watched curling everyday, but I've never been able to get into it.

After all kinds of great events the past few days, I didn't expect ice dancing to be one of the most exciting. That was some good stuff.
