All of the Potentials shown in Season 7 are pretty young, with Kennedy being the oldest at 19. However, one would expect that many Potentials, due to their never being activated as Slayers, would live normal human lifespans. A Potential who was born around the same time as Nikki Wood, for example, would probably have been somewhere around 45 to 50 by Season 7 (based on her having died in the 1970s and the dialogue indicating that Robin is at least 30 in 2003).
So why don't we see any older Potentials? Could it be that, just as a Potential can't be activated until she reaches an appropriate age, an unactivated Potential ceases to be a Potential at a certain age?
And if so, does this apply only to unactivated Potentials, or also to Slayers? It's never been an issue before, because of the average Slayer's very abbreviated lifespan, but is it possible that all of the Slayers at the time of "Chosen" will lose their power at some point -- first Buffy and Faith, then Kennedy, then the others? Or if there is a time limit, does it apply only to unactivated Potentials?
(If a Slayer lost her power at some point, it actually would have been a lot less depressing for the Slayers who lived before the line of succession was abolished ... instead of "you fight, you fight, you fight, and eventually you die," it'd be more like "OK, if you can manage to survive until you're 25 or whatever, the Slayer line will pass to the next person...")

I'd think that there is a certain age that potentials "age out" of. In season 7, Kennedy herself thought she was getting to be too old to be a called anymore. I'd guess that the aging out age has to be around 20 or 21. As far as Slayers aging out, I don't think that happens. Slayers never really get a cop-out (we all know Buffy tried many times to not have to be the Slayer), and their only release is when they die. That's why Spike said in season 5 that Slayers love death, they feel connected with it because its the only way to end their Slayerness.

In the episode "Damage", Dana was around 9-10 years old when she was kidnapped and 15 years later, Dana becomes a Slayer due to the scythe spell. Which would put her around 23-25 years old, so it must be around that time when you start to age out of the potentialness. And 20-25 years old are still pretty young. Also, in the episode "Helpless". The slayer test, Cruciamentum happens when a Slayer enters the age of 18. Base on that episode, I'm guessing there has been no Slayer in history who was chosen from the start at age 19+

I agree that beyond a certain age, a potential slayer "looses" that potential. In reference to the question as to whether or not a slayer who lives long enough would cease being the slayer... I don't think so, I think that the slayer maintains their power for as long as they are alive. Age itself would not strip a slayer of their powers.
