A bit like a blog Whitecandy, but tends to be very fandom oriented and does have a community feel to it. There are lots of whedonverse comms and fans on there. I think there are quite a few members here who have journals. I do, and use it post about mainly fandom related subjects artwork and and new fan vids - with a bit of real life thrown in. I use it to keep up with lots of on line friends (I much prefer it to Facebook).
You can access all public posts but you have to be a mutual friend to read friends locked posts.
@orb - Go to journal home page > Journal drop down menu> Journal Style
I use 'Slinky Pink' layout as it can have a banner added and you can customize colours and backgrounds. Also you can do more complex CSS layouts but I don't have experience in that but I am sure you'll find a community on LJ that will have a tutorial on how to do one, or someone will offer a custom layout for you.
