I posted that my pet betta (Gimpie Raymond Poisson) died last night in the "What's up?" thread. Now I'm making a new thread to find out what killed him, for anyone who might know. When I left home yesterday, he seemed perfectly fine. When I got home, he was pure white (and he was the same color as Betta George originally), bent and stuck behind the filter. At first I thought the filter killed him, but now I'm beginning to think he died before that. Does any former betta owner (or anyone who knows anything) know what might have killed him? I'd like to know if it was my fault or not, or if it could have been helped.

I'm sorry that Gimpie died. It probably wasn't your fault, though. Domestic fish can be very sensitive to their environment and generally have short life spans.
I hope you feel better.

I've never had a betta but I had three black moors. The first two died very shortly after I got them from a thing I later found out about- swimbladder disorder. I found out that veggies prevented this and I kept frozen garden peas to cut up and throw in the tank when my third black moor started to act the same way. They can spend way too much time at the top, because the swim bladder makes them float more. This is the most common symptom. I had her for nearly 2 years. I am not sure what finally killed her, but I know that did help out a lot.
The only other things I know are that fish are sensitive to temperature, acid/alkaline content in the water and soap. There are a myriad of diseases and conditions they can get that you may want to read about. Did it have white spots on it or torn looking places on its body? If they get cold, they sink to the bottom of the tank. I found my third like that sometimes and had to add warmer water to the tank.

Thanks you guys. I'll make sure to consider all those things if I get a new one (which I probably won't any time soon). Karma for helping.

^^It really is. I feel rediculous for being sad over a fish, but it has me upset

You shouldn't feel ridiculous. Regardless of what kind of pet yours was, losing one is never easy.

Eric is right, every single animal that we take into our lives, families and hearts, from fish and hamsters to dogs and horses, are just as important as each other, and the pain is the same for each and every one when they finally leave us. I love hamsters and have had several over the years. I don't think a lot of my friends understand how attached I get to them, and how each and everyone of them is different and has their own little personality. My heart has broken everytime one of them has left me, and I have had each of them cremated and brought back home in a little urn with their name on. My friends take it out of me for this, but at the end of the day, they were part of my family and my life

You guys are right, and have made me feel a little better about the whole situation (more so than people I actually know in person). I really appreciate it

He may have had the Ick. A lot of fish get this disease. My Betta died from this. Poor fishy. Sorry to hear you lost him. Unfortunatly fish can have such unpredicable life spans, I think more so than many other pets.

Yeah I felt the same way after my first two, Joh and Maat died(named after Egyptian gods). My father brought me home my third. That's the only reason I ended up with any more. hehe I did manage to keep her healthy for two years though. I named her Hei Mu Dan because it's the chinese name for Black Moors.
