Ripper seams to be going ahead if we believe the recent Wikipedia update. It states that since Dollhouse has finished Joss has been trying to get the rights to Giles character to use in a Ripper TV special or mini series with the BBC. It also states that the BBC have EVERYTHING in place and are just waiting on the rights to go ahead. "With the cancellation of Dollhouse Whedon has been locked in talks over the rights issues of the character of Rupert Giles. This is the only hurdle with the BBC having funding, location and local production team in place, with Whedon delivering the initial script. It still remains unclear whether it would go beyond a 90 minute TV special or become a stand-alone miniseries." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Undeveloped_Buffy_the_Vampire_Slayer_spinoffs#Ripper

wow...i hope it gets made!....can someone explain why exactly is Whedon having to fight for the rights of his character?...i don't get that part...and that's really lame that that is the only thing standing in the way of making Ripper.

Well, Fox owns the rights to the TV series. That's usually how it works in television and film, you give up the rights to your creation in return for it actually getting made. I think the trouble is that Fox considers the rights to the characters of the TV show as part of the rights to the show itself.

I hope it happens I really do. I know that BBC would love for it to happen also, they have been on board for years. And Head would also love to be part of it. The only problem is continuity.
Is Head even going to be in it? It may be set in the past, Giles in his pre-buffy years? This means Head can reprise the role
After Buffy Season 7? Will it clash with the clearly canon season 8?
Well, aparently the script has been written and I assume everything has been taken into consideration

I haven't reread season eight for a while, but isn't Giles original job (before he joins up with Faith) to go around visiting all of the slayer squads rather than having his own? If this is the case, then perhaps Ripper could be set after season seven, but before he begins his job as traveling watcher.

Although could they do that without at least one or two Buffy character guest appearances? I think it would be difficult.

I envisioned it that it would stay pre-Buffy and focus more on just his character and his personal growth of how he became Ripper and how he evolved after Ripper and then work his story up to the point of when he moved to Sunnydale and met Buffy....i think that would be cool.

Well, the first season of Buffy first aired in 1997 and I think we can assume that's about when it takes place. For Ripper to be pre-Buffy, that would be more than a decade ago and I don't think ASH could pull that off at all. ):

No thanks to a prequal, and ASH is too old to play young. I hope it takes place after season 7. Although this Ripper movie has been discussed for 8 years now. Maybe longer. I'll believe it when I see it. And it does suck to be a creator of characters and write something and not own it.

I don't know why, but I imagined that there would be two stories, one in the present and one during his Ripper days. I assumed they would find another actor to play "Young Giles". I'm pretty sure that this is just something that I formulated in my brain.
On the other hand, I remember reading something about it being a "ghost story". I will now stop putting stuff "in quotes".
Regardless I can't say that I see this happening. We've been teased too many times, so I will believe it when I see it.

I don't think anything has ever been said about it having flashbacks to a young Giles, but it would make sense if it did. It's called "Ripper" after all. And the exact quote about it being a ghost story was ASH describing it as " Cracker with ghosts".

hmm. i think that would be interesting to see the origin of Giles. but don't forget you would need a young Giles(of course) and a young Ethan Rayne too. hopefully if they make it the opening and the ending(or at least something) will have ASH in it...

I kinda figured that at least a ghost or two would be ones from Giles' past.

I always assumed if this was made, it would be about Giles's pre-Buffy past. I will watch it whatever though, please let this go ahead!
