I want to know if anyone has heard anything about the Paul Lee cover for issue 5 being rarer than the other two covers.
I had pre-ordered all 3 covers through my nearest comic store' myspace page (NO! Stores is not a new myspace section.). I just called to make sure they got the pre-order. They said they hadn't received my reply (but they still knew who I was?) but they told me they wouldn't be able to get me the variant.
I said WHICH ONE?
The guy said THERES THE REGULAR COVER AND THEN THE EXTRA COVER
I said I KNOW, BUT THERE ARE 3 COVERS FOR THIS ONE
he said YES THERE ARE, BUT WE PROBABLY WONT BE ABLE TO GET THE SKETCH ONE.
i said WHICH ONE? tHE GEORGES JEANTY ONE OR THE PAUL LEE COVER
the guy said IM PRETTY SURE ITS THE PAUL LEE ONE
i said OK, THANKS, THATS NO BIG DEAL. ILL BE IN AROUND AUGUST 1ST TO PICK UP THE COMICS
OK BYE
BYE
so is the Paul Lee cover harder to get?

Usually the sketches are always harder to get. Like the IDW incentives.

Usually the sketches are always harder to get. Like the IDW incentives. but weren't most of Jeanty's covers sketches? Or is that different since they weren't full color?

Sketch covers have become "the thing" in comic collecting over the past few years. In some cases they are no rarer, in most cases they are EXTREMELY rare. Most are convention exclusive, distributer exclusive, or retailer incentives. Look at the #1 sketch variant only 1000 printed cgi.ebay.com/Buffy-Season-8-1-Sketch-Variant-RRP-Only-1000-Printed_W0QQitemZ220129609534QQihZ012QQcategoryZ3955QQcmdZViewItemSo far this is THE issue to have and most likely the only one that will keep gaining value. Seriously in 6-12 months all buffy covers are going to be $3-5 once the speculative market calms. DO NOT GET SWINDLED BY VARIANT OBSESSION!!! They are just trying to rook 1st time comic buyers into thinking these are rarer than they are. The 1000 print #1 variant is the only valuable one so far...and many don't even know it exists! Oh...to answer the question....yes rarer...but not necessarily valuable. The fact that you can pre-order is proof! $14.99 is premium but since they are taking pre-orders there are plenty!

I'm going to have to outbid everyone on that issue. It's the one thing I do not have!!

Sounds like I was lucky with my #1 sketch variant, it was £25.

I'm getting it! Yes! I just went to the BIG comics and collectibles shop next to my aunt's apartment (the one i talked about in a different post), Downtown Comics, and they pre-ordered it for me. God, I am such a geek!

I pre-ordered it from TFAW.
I'm glad I got the #1 sketch variant early. Although I think I payed like $60 for it.

Just got an email from Cinequest. It says in the email that the Jeanty cover is 1:4 and the Lee cover is 1:12, so yes it is rarER, but not necessarily rare.

I work at a comic book shop and I understand the annoyance at having to pay a premium for a brand new comic. Here's a quick guide to approximate values for variants.
50/50 split - ONLY pay cover price. If they are charging more, find a new place to shop as they are ripping you off.
1:3 or 1:4 - At many shops (mine included) when the variants are that plentiful we sell those at cover price as well. I can understand if smaller shops who only get say, 20 copies TOTAL of an issue would want to price it higher but I wouldn't pay more than double cover price for it.
1:10 or 1:12 - Depending on the book you're looking at $7 to $12 with the vast majority running at $10. Books like Justice League are lucky to get $7 where Buffy will get $10 all day long because of its rabid and much more attractive fan base.
1:20 or 1:25 - This is where books start to get pricy. Right now the 1:20 variant of World War Hulk is easily getting $25 and while we got that on Civil War as well, we're only selling those (from just a year ago) at $10 to try and move them.
1:100 - These are your big time premium books. They USUALLY hover around $100 for about 8 months or so and then settle in at around $60 for the long haul. The sketch of Buffy #1 was a 1:100 book and the reason there were so few is who knew the book would be selling this well.
Big time Dark Horse books like Star Wars usually sell around 10 to 15 copies a month in my store. We've had to do multiple reorders on every issue of Buffy to the point where we're doing Spider-Man numbers with an indy book. That is unheard of these days! I know as a fan and as a retailer seeing this book do so well has been incredible. I knew we would at least double the number of Angel copies we sold but I never expected this kind of response. People who have never been in a comic shop before are coming in for Buffy and checking out other stuff like Anita Blake and Gunslinger Born. I have a feeling Umbrella Academy may do something similar (though on a smaller scale) when it drops in September. It's an exciting time to be a fan of comics.
