Over here, Beaumonde showed a couple of screencaps that show the staircase in the Summers home changing construction from Season 2 to Season 6.
I've always had a certain amount of trouble picturing the Summers home's internal layout, so I thought it might be fun to go into it in more depth.
The Buffyverse wiki entry on the Summers house links to this set of fanmade floor plans:
The episode where we get the clearest overall picture of the first floor's layout is probably "The Body," because of that long steadicam shot where we follow Buffy through the discovery of her mother's body and the immediate aftermath. She walks in the door and to the staircase directly ahead; the living room where she finds Joyce is clearly to the left as she comes in the door. Then she goes up through the living room, past the sitting room area, to the kitchen where the phone is. The sitting room is where she throws up on the floor; the back door from the kitchen is where she listens to the children playing outside; the long shot down the hallway when Giles comes in shows the arrangement of the center part of the house.
At first I thought the "House of chicks, relax, I am a man and I have a tool" scene from the beginning of "Bargaining" was inconsistent with this; then I watched the scene again and realized Xander was coming in the back door.
The stairs seem to be the biggest problem here; the floor plan does show the bend, but we know the bend is to the left -- which makes sense, otherwise they'd be opening onto the bathroom, not the hallway -- but they appear to make a magical quantum leap from the approximate center of the house to one side.
