I don't think there's much chance Joss is plotting his story to follow the Twilight books. (Although he's really not doing himself any favors by throwing out so many references to it.)
The long delay is probably to make certain Joss has all his scripts finished and submitted before they start publishing the arc. They figure it's better to have a long delay before the arc, than to risk having a long delay in the middle of it.

Yeah I fully support the delay if it means Joss gets all his scripts in on time. I really don't want another Time of Your Life incident.

There's a fine line to dance between production delays and rushing a product. Delay too often, and it becomes a source of criticism (see Joss' Astonishing X-Men run, which although critically acclaimed, was frequently criticized for falling behind on schedule by fans). But put out a lousy product and there'll be plenty of criticism for that too. Me, I much prefer the former. Because if I have to wait, I damn well get a superior product (which Joss' AXM was). The "Predators and Prey" arc is an example of when things got rushed to meet deadlines (Jeanty even had to be replaced for #24 because he couldn't keep up with the production demands), and the overall product was subpar.
That said, I really don't think that delaying the final arc a few months is going to "hype" things up. In fact, it would seem that the opposite would be true. Instead of jumping straight into the fire, we're sitting about, stewing (hmmm... that metaphor worked a little better than anticipated) over some of the leftover questions from the previous arc (which again, started strong, and ended rather weak, same case as Jane's "Retreat"). But here's hoping that the Riley one-shot will provide some answers about both Riley and Twilight.

Thanks to Buffyfest, we now have the title of the final arc. Check out the short update HERE.

And they were originally planning to call it "Sunnydale" Time travel ahoy! Yeah, I think we are going back to the future. Or back to the past more likely. This is looking more and more like the "reboot" people have been speculating about.

I think they'll be travelling back to the past, to fix certain things, but I don't think they'll be staying there. Scott has said several things that make it pretty clear season 9 will be moving the story forward from season 8, not rebooting it. I really can't imagine Joss wanting to reboot the franchise. I think Buffy's character journey is too important to him to play games like that.

I thought the whole reboot thing was a crazy idea, but after awhile it was starting to seem possible, so I'm glad the consensus is that it doesn't look like it will happen. I want to see the story move forward too!

Some people are also predicting bad things for Dawn because of the "Star-Spangled Banner" lyric:
"Oh say can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming."
The lyrics refer to the U.S. flag at the Battle of Ft. McHenry (War of 1812), which was flying when the sun went down (twilight), and then still seen to be flying and undefeated when the sun came up the next dawn despite heavy bombardment of the fort through the night by the British navy.
If Joss is using the song for clues to the story (and I kind of doubt it), then dawn is a symbol of triumph, not death.

In which case, she'll probably sacrifice her life, tying in with 'The Gift', where she wanted to do it to save her friends and also (predictably) ends her relationship with Xander via death

I get that people have some concerns about it, but I would love it if they time-travelled back to Sunnydale even for a little bit. I'm not sure what they'll do with it, but I miss the old hood, and it would be nice to see what they do with it.

^^^I miss Sunnydale too, but I'm afraid I just don't see that there's any going back now.
I think the Dawn sacrifice idea is good, I mean apparently Buffy was right in ehr guess at the Twilight symbol and a dawn is a bit like a sunset, plus they haven't really made ehr relationship with Xzander seem very long-term. It seems like more of a dramatic device than a character growth.

There's a little solicitation-y blurb on the Comics Continuum site (but not the official solicitation, I don't think:) "Tearing the Scoobies apart and testing the limits of their friendship," eh? Strange as it seems to say it... that line actually makes me feel better about the direction of the story. Maybe things won't just be hand-waved after all, and there will be some real consequences and real emotional reactions. Good. On the same site, it says they're re-releasing Buffy #1 as a special for $1, but this is the old Buffy series, not season 8. ETA: This is the official solicitation after all. Seems early.
