Maybe this has been discussed before ... I looked for a thread and couldn't find one, but it's a hard topic to find the right search keywords for.
When looking for clues about Willow's sexual orientation in the first few seasons, it seems like there are just as many "gay Xander" hints as there are "gay Willow" hints. Which makes sense, since Joss has said he played with the idea of making either one of them gay, and initially hadn't decided which. But the occasional hints for Xander didn't stop, even after it became clear that wasn't the direction his character was going to go.
Examples, ranging from the first half of Season 1 to the second half of Season 7:
From "Teacher's Pet," when Xander and Willow see Angel. This one doubles as a Willow clue:
XANDER: He's buff. She never said anything about him being buff. WILLOW: You think he's buff? XANDER: He's a very attractive man! How come that never came up?
From Seasons 2 and 3:
Pretty much all of the Larry stuff.
From "Goodbye Iowa," when Buffy takes Xander into the Initiative:
XANDER: Holy moly. BUFFY: I know. XANDER: I totally get it now. Can I have sex with Riley too?
From "Intervention," when the Scoobies confront Buffy about what they say her robot double doing with Spike:
XANDER: No one is judging you. It's understandable. Spike is strong and mysterious and sort of compact but well-muscled. BUFFY: I am not having sex with Spike! But I'm starting to think that you might be.
From "First Date," after he's captured by a demon who wants his blood to open the Seal of Danzalthar:
WILLOW: What happened? XANDER: What do you think happened? Another demon woman was attracted to me. I'm going gay. I've decided I'm turning gay. Willow, gay me up. Come on, let's gay. WILLOW: What? XANDER: You heard me. Just tell me what to do. I'm mentally undressing Scott Bakula right now. That's a start, isn't it? ANDREW: Captain Archer... XANDER:Come on, let's get this gay show on the gay road. Help me out here. BUFFY: What if you just start attracting male demons? DAWN: Clem always liked you. ANYA: It would serve you right. GILES: Children, enough. XANDER: I'd need some stylish new clothes.
===
So: Are we meant to draw any significance from these? Or is it just that Xander, always the class clown, is comfortable enough with himself to say things that a lot of other men wouldn't?
Even if there's no particular significance, it DOES indicate an admirable consistency on the part of the writers, in terms of taking relatively minor character quirks and sticking with them throughout the entire run of the series.

I don't think we're supposed to read too much into it. I think as soon as Joss & co. decided to make Willow gay instead of Xander they just kept the gay comments in as a runnning gag, kind of similar to Chandler on Friends or J.D. on Scrubs.
As you said, though, it's admirable that they kept it going throughout the seasons. One of the things I love about Buffy is that the writing never gets lazy.

Don't forget that look between Xander and Spike in "Beneath You".

Don't forget that look between Xander and Spike in "Beneath You". Yeah, I think thats the strongest evidence that maybe Xander had too much to drink around Spike and stuff went on.

I never interpreted that to mean they'd actually done anything together. Rather, more like when Nancy asked the question, everyone actually had to think about it for a second ... and, in the course of glancing around the group, Xander and Spike made eye contact and both went to a scary visual place where they really didn't want to go.
However, given that the script actually does say "Spike and Xander barely glance at one another," I'd love to be able to ask Doug Petrie exactly what he had in mind...
On the whole, none of the comments Xander makes are inconsistent with him being heterosexual, even if they're not necessarily things a lot of straight men would say. And the comparison to Chandler on "Friends" is interesting, since the two characters actually do have a fair number of traits in common.

I was just pointing it out because of how funny it is and how so many fangirls automatically jumped to the conclusion that it meant something. Don't forget that look between Xander and Spike in "Beneath You". Yeah, I think thats the strongest evidence that maybe Xander had too much to drink around Spike and stuff went on. :/

In response to your " :/ ", that seriously is the only scenario I could conjure that would ever have Spike and Xander ever getting together. Spike is a vampire who has lived a very long time, living in a state where the lines of society and sexuality are blurred. Xander seems like a man who is very secure in his sexuality, and so he can comment on a man's attractiveness, without it making it out that he may be gay. Maybe a immeasurable amount of alcohol in that mix of personalities could possibly tip off that kind of situation.

I don't think either are even fully bisexual, just comfortable with their sexuality and not judgemental, therefore they probably wouldn't go too far, just play with fire a bit...it would be interesting, lol.

Wait. So you were being for serious? 'Cause I thought you were being sarcastic... Oh! I was being totally serious, yeah! Sorry if it came out to sound like I was being a jerk. If I'm joking around, I'll always add a "ROFL" type lingo thingy.

James and Nick share a kiss in Normal Again. Xander and Spike were fighting so badly that James couldn't help the sexual tention and kissed Nick. It was so funny, especially when Alyson said, "They're gonna kiss!" I wish they kept it in the episode. Buffy would have been blown away with jealousy.
