Was it sabotaged though? It still did what it was supposed to do; i.e. spew green flamey demons. It also managed to pierce whatever defenses the castle had. The low mortality rate could probably be attributed to effective evacuation the moment the missile pinged on the screen. It seemed to have a lower explosive yield than expected. The force of the explosion seemed to be a disappointment (despite Warren trying to deflect blame to Amy, whose part of the project actually worked fine.) If the missile malfunctioned mechanically but performed magically, that could be because Riley knows how to mess up a missile mechanically but not magically. Just speculation, though.

It should also be noted that Riley's first appearance of Season 8 occurred in the same arc of the missile explosion.

New interview up from Scott about the Riley One-Shot and a character returning for this issue:
"And there’s a character who’s never appeared before in Season 8, who I was happy to bring into it. I know some fans are gonna say, “Goddammit, you guys will shoehorn in EVERYONE but MY favorite character ________,” but what it came down to was that we had an empty space in the story that required a certain kind of character, and we talked about how to introduce such a figure, and realized there was someone who made perfect sense to have a small role in Season 8, in this one particular bit of business. We didn’t set out to reintroduce this character, this character just made too much sense."
I know Anya has no connections to Riley whatsoever but I believe it'll be her. She has been sorely missed this season.
Buffy characters that haven't appeared in season 8 whatsoever: Anya Jenny Mayor Glory Forrest Wesley Adam Maggie
Unfortunately after making the list I realized that it will probably be someone like Maggie, Adam, or Forrest due to their connection with Riley but I still hope for Anya!

All those characters are dead, though. I doubt Joss will be bringing anyone else back from the dead this season.
The list of significant characters who are alive, who haven't appeared yet in season 8, and who would have any conceivable reason to interact with Riley is a pretty short list. It could be someone completely unexpected, of course. Maybe Parker Abrams has gotten a job with DARPA or something...

I guess we'll see.

I bet it will either be GRAHAM or GLORY. Probably & Preferably, it will be Glory- what with the appearance of goddesses in 'retreat' & the "twilight reality", Glory seems like she could sneak in the story somehow.

There's a lot of speculation on Whedonesque that the mystery character is none other than Marcie Ross.
I've never been one of the "bring back Marcie" cheerleaders, but I have to admit... that's a cool idea, and really fits if we assume Marcie went on to work for the government.
Could she be the one murdering those Slayers that Willow found when she went looking for Faith?
Anyway, Marcie is now candidate #1 as far as I'm concerned.

Scott said that the character is many people's favorite though. While I think that Marcie would make sense with the storyline, I don't think Scott would have phrased it like that. You know? Just a thought.

I wouldn't be surprised if she was being used in response to the numerous fan requests.

Yeah, Scott has been constantly amazed all through season 8 at all the people asking for Marcie to show up in the story. I think she's our girl.

I personally don't get all the Marcie love, but if she shows up in Season 8 it would make sense with the plot I guess. Especially after all of the requests for her.

Marcie had a nice episode and all, but, come on, she was in one episode of season 1. There's no reason she needs to come back. I seriously have no idea why a lotta people seem to want her back in the first place.

^ well, what got my suspicions up with the whole marcie ross character returning, was that somewhere in the first six or seven issues, in letter columns, there were maybe three letters from fans all asking about marcie.
my first reaction was that this was a hint at what was to come. but through the q&a sessions, i started to get the feeling maybe not. but re-reading now, i still think it's possible for her to squeeze in. besides, if buffy'sbuffy does end up going back in time (season one-ish), they may give her a familiar (blinvisible) foe from that season.
perhaps marcies powers have adapted beyond simple invisibility. maybe she's discovered the key to time travel. couldn't the perfect assassin go back in time to avert major catastrophes? maybe marcie will go back in time to try and kill buffy to prevent this apocalypse.

I can' t remember, was the fandom screaming "Bring Back Marcie!" for 6 seasons while the show was airing? Not that I ever heard. But her character was interesting, and had an interesting ability, and the ending of the episode suggested more to come, and Clea DuVall is a good actress. Marcie was probably the most spinoff-worthy one-shot character ever on the show. And she was the character responsible for sending Cordelia off on her long, long character journey from obnoxious bitca to heroine and emissary of the Powers That Be... so she's got that going for her too.

I wrote a fic. once where Xander, Marcy, mid-way dusted vampire, and Cordy (as a spirit guide) all start their own little slaying crew. I think Vi may have been there too. Haha. Oh gosh. I wish I still had it!

I always thought it would have been cool if she'd appeared in one of the first few seasons of Angel. She could have been on some assasination mission in LA and ran into Angel Investigations, only to restart her vendetta against Cordy. It would have been funny if Cordelia didn't even remember her. "Who are you again? Sorry, but a lot of people tried to kill me in high school."
