I think people want to see Marcie because they think it makes sense with the military portion of the plot. I can' t remember, was the fandom screaming "Bring Back Marcie!" for 6 seasons while the show was airing? I don't know about the fandom, but I always wanted Marcie to come back. I always thought it would have been cool if she'd appeared in one of the first few seasons of Angel. She could have been on some assasination mission in LA and ran into Angel Investigations, only to restart her vendetta against Cordy. It would have been funny if Cordelia didn't even remember her. "Who are you again? Sorry, but a lot of people tried to kill me in high school." Lol that is so funny. Would have been epic. I really hope that it is Graham, but I will be happy if it is Marcie also.

I wrote a fic. once where Xander, Marcy, mid-way dusted vampire, and Cordy (as a spirit guide) all start their own little slaying crew. I think Vi may have been there too. Haha. Oh gosh. I wish I still had it! What exactly is a mid-way dusted vampire? haha Hahah. I think it had something to do with some time glitch or spell or something. And it was basically a walking pile of dust, in the shape of a vampire. I don't know why, I wrote it I think the week of the S7 finale.

Buffy characters that haven't appeared in season 8 whatsoever: Anya Jenny Mayor Glory Forrest Wesley Adam Maggie You forgot Cordy and Drusilla. Well they have no connections to Riley, but the issue is about Twilight-Angel either - so I’m going to buy it, if it was only about Riley I wouldn’t. And Cordellia and Dru definitely have connection to Angel. I’d love to see one of them. I love Cordy and Dru! Especially Cordy!!!

Everybody's talking about the mysterious new to comic character, but I so much want to see again Ethan! Wouldn't it be cool if he was kept in that military base?

I wouldn't keep my hopes up for that one

Same pages as before, with dialog and color.
So the General in that last panel... is the same General from Retreat and Twilight, I'm guessing.

Trying to establish the time frame here.
Sam's words indicate that Riley has already been approached by Twilight; that he then told Buffy about it, and she asked him to accept and serve as her double agent.
That would place it sometime before the ToYL arc. Buffy's meeting with Riley in New York can't be the one referred to here, since Riley was already working for Twilight by then and reporting back to him.
It's odd that Sam seems firmly convinced that the future of the world is at stake here. At this point, pre-Harmony and pre-Vampy Cats, Twilight's threat seemed to be mainly against Buffy and the Slayers, not the world at large. Apparently Sam believes that the future of the world depends on the Slayers.
Furthermore, being an embedded double agent in the camp of an evil dark lord is dangerous. I know she and Riley are in the danger business and all, but she does seem over-eager to push him into this. Obviously she is ambivalent about the idea of settling down as a farmer's wife... maybe she's trying to steer him away from that.
Or maybe she's secretly working for Twilight herself. Or the "Universe" is causing her to say these things to manipulate Riley, as it did to Angel through various joggers and birds and Geppettos.
The title of the issue is interesting. "Commitment through distance" I get... Riley is going to be distant from the two people he's committed to (Buffy and Sam). Maybe "Virtue through sin" means that by participating in Twilight's "sinful" activities, Riley is actually being virtuous by helping to take him down eventually.

Finally! First post updated with preview images. Sorry about the delay. I only arrived home in my hometown yesterday, after nearly a week at a conference, and then a two day flight crossing multiple timezones. And then I found out that there would be a snag concerning getting reliable internet. But whatevs. I'm BACK!

Aw, I love Sam. Espenson made me love her. Especially this line:
I'm also enjoying Sam's emphatic encouragement based on the very practical reason that it's easier living their settled down life if there's "a planet under us."
I think Sam is going to be another character who benefits from the comics just like Kennedy. Especially with Espenson writing her. Her practicality and subtle humor are already apparent, but without the actress undermining the writing, Sam is appearing to be a very genuine, goodhearted individual.
One thing I'm beginning to get worried about is how this setup works. I'm assuming Riley was approached by the General for recruitment, but was that under Twilight's direction? Was Angel then setting up Riley to be a double agent, somehow knowing that Buffy would be asking him to spy for her? See, the problem with the usefulness of this issue is that the setup of the double agent mystery is not the complaint with Riley's character arc for Season 8. The complaint is that his being a double agent apparently helped zip, nada, nunca. And that's only going to be fixed by showing how Riley actually helped Buffy as a double agent.

^^^ Umm . . . your spoiler marks haven't showed up Emmie
Personally I've never really liked Sam or Riley, I was happy enough to have them off the show. But I did really like the line Emmie quoted, she seems slightly more interesting in this issue and I can only hope the same goes for Riley so I may purchase it.
I'm afraid I don't get all the Marcie love. I just was never really drawn to that character. I'd love to see Glory back. She was an awesome villain. And we only know for sure that Ben was killed . ..

I can see them. Oh well. Since no one else is bothering with the spoilers I don't suppose it matters.

They're showing up fine. However, I've noticed that occasionally, when a page lags a little during loading, the text within the spoiler tags pop up momentarily.
On topic now, I'm really excited for this one-shot. It sounds like Espenson packed this thing full of good stuff, but I hope it does deliver. Nothing worse than promises of goodies and getting shite instead. Espenson's writing on S8 has been spotty... her lack of consistency has made me rather wary of her ability to write good scripts for comics.

Finally got a chance to sit down, and read the preview. I thought it was... Okay. It jumped around a lot, IMO. The sentences seemed to go from one thing to another, and it was kinda hard to follow. Maybe it's just me?

And I get what you mean VampSlayer it's a little like they're trying to expose us to every facet of Sam and Riley's relationship in the space of a couple of pages and it comes out a little stilted but it still looks good

Re: How Riley helped Buffy as a double agent...
We didn't see much of him in action, so we can't be sure what he did behind the scenes. In "Retreat" I think he bought the Slayers some time by convincing Twilight that the "hit" he got on the Slayers in Central Asia was just a blip in the system... and possibly by manipulating him into having his only competent henchman executed.
Also, since (as this preview indicates) Riley is familiar enough with missiles to have security clearance to an ICBM silo, he might have been able to sabotage Warren's missile so that it yielded less power than expected and saved Buffy's squad from being completely wiped out.
He might also have interfered with Amy's attempts to magically track the submarine, but I think that was more likely Willow's doing.
I'll be interested to find out why Angel wanted Riley (whom he doesn't like) working for him, and why he thought Riley would be willing to betray Buffy like this. Did he know the whole time that Riley would be a double agent, and was that all part of his plan?

Only two days until the long drought is over! It's been a while since I had to run to the comics shop after work on a Wednesday.
I wonder if Buffy herself will be in this issue at all.

Running to the shop 'after work', sheesh, I usually go during the lunch break - or take a 15 min break at 9:45 and get it at 10 am. Chuckle. As for Buffy, well, hopefully she will be present in flashbacks at least. She is on one of the covers.
