They could have used Psi-vampires.

I mean they are a different breed of vampire shown in Asian, some South American and Native American/Canadian mythology of being vampires with some have fangs and they don't suck blood but rather suck out souls/energy/youth/lifeforces out of humans and living beings instead and can't be killed by sunlight but some different ways like the torso instead of the heart and by gold or copper than silver.

That could have added some spice and flavor over the tiresome fanged bloodsucking which i do enjoy but kind of gets boring afterwall with been there done that but Psi-vampires add something new as movies like Lifeforce, Captain Kronos, Sleepwalkers, Def By Temptation (Even though the vampire succubus creature sucks both souls and blood), and some others feature Psi-vampires or Psychic soul sucking vampires.

Or maybe even cannibal vampires which is mentioned in Filipino, Hawaiian and Native-American/Native Canadian vampire legends could be nice as they would eat hearts or some organs rather than just for the blood.

Though there's really no indication in the Buffyverse of those varieties existing. Separate mythologies and all.
