buffysmglover-thoughts.blogspot.com/2007/10/season-eight-is-this-way-show-was-meant.htmlSEASON EIGHT: Is This the Way the Show Was Meant to Be? [SPOILERS AHEAD] A lot of us have been reading Season Eight and we all have our nitpicks about how very comic-y it is. Giant Dawn. Flying Willow. Very medievally-dressed Willow. Big Gargoyles. Dreamspace. An underground colony of slug demons. Faeries.Just to name some. And while I had previously been one of these fans who are somewhat agitated at some of these things (especially the cover for Issue 10 (see cover at groups.yahoo.com/groups/btvs-angel-authors) because although it is amazing in detail, it's just too comicy) I have now moved on to a larger thought... What if this is what has been floating through Joss' mind since Season Six? What if this is what the show would have been with a bigger budget and better special effects? Keep in mind that Scott Allie has made it clear that nothing gets put into the comic, writing or art, without Joss watching over it and making sure it is to his liking. What if he's been wanting to turn a character into a giant for a while? Is it possible the only reason we haven't seen Willow wearing these types of dresses before because either the crew couldn't find some or afford them? Is it possible that with the right amount of money we would have been seeing Amy and Willow floating and flying since Season Six and Seven? And what about everything else that would/could have been done in the show? An even bigger question that needs to be asked is, if everything mentioned above WAS in the show, if Willow did fly a lot, if Dawn was a giant, if there were faeries, if Willow was wearing medieval clothing, would we still be fans? Would we have continued to watch the show each episode without a second thought?

A lot of the demons look way cooler now, and I think they would have looked a lot more like this if the show had a higher budget, but I think flying medival Willow is very specific to this season. She was always either too weak or too scared to fly before, and I think the new wardrobe has something to do with what she was doing for the past year. And I think Dawn is just giant because Joss thinks it's funny.

.... so when willow broke up w/ kennedy, she decided she was gonna go back to her medieval dress-style from Once More w/ Feeling...
personally, i wish willow dressed like in jo's cover for the tpb.
kind of a mix between medieval dress and a more modern look.

It will be interesting to see if she keeps dressing like that indefinitely. Also, Willow didn't really "break up" with Kennedy (yet) did she? It certainly seems as if Joss is steering things in that direction, but I don't think it's really official yet. Of course, Willow was in denial for a long time after Tara left her, so I suppose maybe she hasn't figured it out yet.

They said they chose Willow's dress because 1) it's an homage to Tara, and 2) it wouldn't look right for her to be flying around in pants/jeans. It looks more magical in a dress. Then why was Amy wearing jeans? She still looked magical.

Would we have continued to watch the show each episode without a second thought? im not seeing an kind of problem with how Joss is unfolding this world. I mean it is a comic and has been for a long time now. Its no longer just a tv show its a comic as well. I think Willow had never fly in the show because she wasn't that sure of her self but when she turned dark she did use magic to get from places so its not like she has never done anything like this before, and the dress it added to the moment. Like people said if she came wearing a tank top and bottoms you wouldn't be like 'omg Willow' and such and Amy well she dint really make the kind of entrance Willow did plus two totally different types of people there with different types of fashion. I see no problem in having Slug demons, faeries Gargoyles etc in the comic. We have had fairytale monsters in before and some way more different kind of demons so whats the bug about having them in it. I don't think its the case of would we still be fans if all this happened in the tv show because where still readin the comic arnt we so i don't see how it could be any different from watching it. Its still going to be written immensely.

I feel there is a Charmed element that the comics have that the show didn't. With the various cornyness to it, and I don't think it would work on TV. Charmed tried faries and giants and it looked bad, so maybe it wasn't the budget, but maybe Joss just knew it wouldn't look right on TV and kind of stuck to more realistic things until he got the outfit (the comic) to explore the more supernatural side he was unable to.
Also not a fan of the Willow outfit, but it some what works. Though it just doesn't seem her style.

The stuff we see in the comic is normal and expected in comics. But putting that into a tv show would probably be VERY corny.

While the comic- y feel drives into me that this is not TV Buffy, I am simply enraptured by comic BTVS. In Episode Four, I felt that depth was truly added by drawing in the natural and magical elements of Willow- that we likely wouldn't have seen in the TV Series.
While we've lost some gritty realism of a budget constraint, we've gained a new creative outlet.

Nah of course the TV series wouldn't have been the same.
I keep playing with the idea and trying to buy into these, but really, they're just faggy comics lol. I just can't.

I think that definitely had the show had a higher budget we would have seen alot more of the things we are seeing now. But Buffy, at its core is a show about people. Regarding Willow, we saw her transform from a nerdy shy highschool kid into a beautiful young woman with her own sense of style. Remeber what Willow's fear was is Restless? That she was still that same girl from Welcome To The Hellmouth. I think its very natural for the character of Willow to dress the way that she does in the comics. I think she has grown up and found peace. It has been a long transformation for Willow. But I think she finally knows who she really is.

If the show hadn't ended, I don't think Season 7 would have gone the way it did in the first place! So I bet everything would be different.
With that said, we know that budget would have been a big issue. So things like flying wiccan battles, castles in Scotland and a giant Dawn might not have been possible.

I think if season 8 had happened right after season 7, it would have been very different simply because Joss/the writers would have had less time to come up with the direction of the season. Not to mentioned if actors wanted to leave the show, etc.
With all the time that has passed since the show ended, Joss has had a lot of time to think about things and the plot, so while I don't think the direction is true to what the show would have been, I think it's a more pure/thought-out form of the Buffy story as a whole.

(I don't think Jo's cover is very Willow-y at all! She's by far too modest and shy to show her whole back like that! That's more Vampire Willow than any normal Willow costume.)
We wouldn't be fans of the show if Willow and Amy could fly in season 6? We wouldn't have liked Giant Dawn? What do we like about the show, if we hate all the magic and or super hero oriented things?
I miss the early seasons of Buffy, as I've said, but I like season 8 too. It's the same show on a much larger scale than ever before.

I think the first thing to remember is that there never was going to be a season 8, at least not on television anyway. The show was always heading towards an end with season 7 and so everything you saw happen that year was directed towards closure. Had the show been somehow guaranteed nine seasons then we probably wouldn't have seen the destruction of Sunnydale until the end of season 9, so season 8 would still have been set within the town we knew and loved. No way would they have relocated to the UK, for a start. Also, originally the plan was for a spinoff to continue the story on television. Had the Faith show happened, or the telemovies, or had Ripper gone ahead back when it was supposed to, then the landscape would eb a very different place and the story would have been told differently. Hell, even a sixth and seventh season of Angel on television would have likely changed the plans for the Scoobies over time. What we have now is the status quo determined by what did happen. No further television projects means that Joss was free to entirely rethink what he wanted for the gang and their individual paths. Faith's life would be entirely different now had her show happened. Spike would have been with her rather than in LA right now so even season 5 of Angel would be a different animal. Basically what we see in the comics is in no way what we would have seen in a televised season 8. With all the above and the fact Joss now has absolutely no restraints to his budget we are getting a story that he has not only had to rethink but has been able to do so with a whole new set of rules, which is probably the reason it is turning out so damn cool.

I think that Joss will go over the top for a while, because of all of the oportunities he sees now and slowly it will find a sort of balance between tv-show and overly-comicy. Not to say that it is too comicy for it to be good, but I think he's just like Angel when he entered Pylea and discovered he could walk in the sun there.
