So, I know there are some of you who are planning to go the Lady GaGa's Monster Ball sometime soon, so I thought I'd give you just a little rundown of what I thought of the show.
I'm going to try my best not to bore you with a bible-length lecture on what I thought, but hopefully someone will read this and I'm not just spending an hour writing this for my health.
First of all, I'm going to start with the line/arrival.
So we leave NYC early in the morning and we get to Indianapolis at about 2 P.M. There's already a generously-sized line outside of the venue (the Conseco Fieldhouse), so my aunt and I are happy to get in the back.
We stood there for about three hours (switching it up from standing outside in the 90 degree heat and acting like we kept getting kicked to the back of the line when we got inside where they were selling tee shirts just on the other side of the door, where they had air conditioning) listening to the radio station next door play most of The Fame, as well as a small interview with GaGa from backstage, and seeing the scarcity of people showing up before we decided to go get something to eat down the street and come back to the line when we were done.
We ended up eating at an Arby's a couple of blocks from the venue, and by the time we got done it was about 5:15 P.M., it had started to rain, and traffic was beginning to dense up along all of the blocks we had walked to get here.
The guards outside had told us that we could go inside as long as we were out in time that we wouldn't hear the sound check backstage. Well, it turns out that they let the entire line outside go inside the fieldhouse so they wouldn't get rained on, so we gladly went inside and worked our way to the front of the "line" (which was more like a horde) just outside the stage. We got to hear the sound check, just as they didn't want us to, but I'm glad they were nice enough to let everybody in from the nasty weather.
I was told that doors would open at 7 P.M. (which they did), so we waited about 10 minutes before we saw a girl with a camera, which our tickets told us not to bring. Luckily I'd brought my camera and left it in the car just in case we would get lucky enough to bring ours in. So we went back outside, ran through the rain about a block until we arrived at the parking space we had paid to park in and I got my camera.
After that, we headed to the back entrance because before there weren't any guards frisking the people before they went in. Sadly, there were when we got back there.
The guard that checked me and told me to take everything out of my pockets. I quickly grabbed my camera and put it over my head so he didn't see it as he proceeded to check my pockets and shirt.
I quickly ran inside just in case he told me to put the camera away, and my aunt came in after me.
We got back in the line that had increased in size since we had been there the first time, but we somehow managed to make it to the front again.
Now it was about 5:30 P.M. and nearly everybody was sitting in the line. At about 5:45 they told us to all stand up, so I was under the impression that, since everybody was most likely here by this time, they were going to let us in early.
My mistake.
I ended up standing outside in the line (like everyone else) from 5:45 to 7:00, plus the 3 hours before when we were outside in the line. So far that's about 5 hours of standing, almost nonstop.
So they let us in at 7:00, and I was lucky enough to get my ticket scanned, checked, and get my wristband with the first, I'd say, 100 people and I ran to the stage. I got almost to the very front and we stood there from 7:00 to 8:00, when the ticket said the show would start. Lady Starlight was DJ'ing within that time frame.
The show did start at 8:00, but not the actually Monster Ball.
Semi Precious Weapons (who I love) opened for GaGa from 8:00 to 9:00, and then at 9:00 GaGa came on.
The show ended at about 12:00, so there's another 5 hours of standing. And it was about 10:30 when I passed out (oops), partly because I couldn't believe I was seeing GaGa in the flesh, and also because I hadn't had water since we left New York that morning.
I came back to my senses just minutes later, and I continued to take pictures and scream and jump, even the the guards at the front of the stage wanted to take me out.
Now let's get to the actual show:
GaGa performed all of the songs off of The Fame Monster, as well as a vast majority of songs from The Fame.
There were plenty of outfit changes, and the hydraulic stage and almost constant set changes made it not only a concert, but a play-like performance (I refuse to call it a concert because that doesn't do it any justice).
The music was definitely loud. Actually a bit too loud. Especially with SPW. I ended up plugging my ears nearly the entire show because I was actually kind of worried about my sense of hearing (this is the only "concert" I've ever been to, so I don't know if they're all this loud...). But when Bad Romance started I didn't care about my ears, knees, feet, or back (which had been killing me since we got there) and I screamed the entire song and was jumping and dancing and all the other things everybody does when they hear that song.
I know I was supposed to leave feeling absolutely joyous and free (which I did...somewhat), but I ended up feeling like crap. Not because the show was bad, not at all was it bad, but because I had been standing nearly half of a full day, and I was so dehydrated that I passed out.
Overall I enjoyed myself more than I ever have before, but I'd been on my feet so long that they actually bruised.
But my pain absolutely doesn't take away from the amazingness (word...?) of the show. I would give it a 10 out of 10 without even thinking about it.
I'm still kind of in shock that I was actually there, and we're going again in March.
Hope this gave you a little hint of what to expect if you're going.
