OMG! I was watching S3's Revelations last night and Gwendolyn Post asked Giles if he'd ever heard of Sir Robert Kane's TWILIGHT COMPENDIUM...?!?!
He had a copy of it as well. Do you think this is merely a coincidence, or is there more to this once off-beat line?

In issue 8, Roden's summoning spell calls "the first of the last" to him. This is Buffy. My thoughts are that this may be a reference to Fray, in which there had been no Slayers for several centuries. Buffy was the first Slayer of their last wave (at least for a long time).

Yeah, I thought that too. It would be very interesting if that was true CowboyGuy, but as Mikey said I think it's more coincidence.

That'd be what you call a coincidence lol. The word twilight isn't a rare one, and certainly not in the fantasy genre. Well I know. But I just found it interesting. She was evil after all. It would be kinda neat if Joss pulled that as a reference for S8.

It is interesting. It might be something to do with that, but I doubt it.

Do you think this is merely a coincidence, or is there more to this once off-beat line? No one is allowed to call me crazy, until we find out more about Season Eight. Not too long ago I saw a connection between the fact that the Mayor knew Buffy was a Slayer and higher people as low as Prinicipal Snyder seemed to know about vampires. "PCP." I still think the President could have been watching over the Slayer since she was in HS. Anyone have reason to disagree?

LOL. Would he be right, though? Maybe he doesn't even know ALL the slayers were activated...but somebody in the government obviously knows something, and one would think there were connections to the higher presidential position. That could be a story arc: Buffy saves the president! Buffy vs. Air Force One (Vampires on Planes). Samuel L. Jackson could make a cameo appearance, just to say "I want these mother f-ing vampires on this mother f-ing plane!" LOL. Sorry...I'm tired. I get what you're saying is what I'm trying to say...

I think that is a little bit of a stretch, if I'm honest. What was going on in Sunnydale was a direct result of the Mayor controlling the town to suit his own plans. He has people in key positions of power to help keep his scheme on track, which is why Snyder and the Police Chief knew about vamps, demons and slayers. There is no reason to believe that this was in anyway connected to anyone or anywhere outside of Sunnydale. In fact I'd say that the Mayor would have ensured that didn't happen, for his own sake. He didn't exactly want the Government swooping in on his big day and ruining everything.
That isn't to say that the Government knew nothing about slayers in general. Just because the Initiative didn't seem to have much of an idea about them doesn't mean that other people in power weren't better informed. I'd have to imagine though that whilst there was some understanding of the supernatural beings that exist in the world, for the most part the Government were absolutely clueless.

It's a very interesting thought. In a way, I hope Joss does reference that episode... like tying up a loose end we didn't even know about.

Having just watched Season Four's 'A New Man', I'm starting to wonder whether we've seen the last of Ethan Rayne, or whether his involvement wasn't something to do with Twilight; in the same episode, Ethan refers to 'the time of magic', in reference to himself and Giles being mystics. I wonder whether this season doesn't have a stronger connection to Season Four than just the reappearance of the military / government.
Also, in terms of parallels, Giles doesn't want Buffy to know about him being turned into a demon through pride, rather than through wanting to protect her from anything. Interesting, perhaps, given the fact that Giles has been keeping Buffy out of the loop recently...

I really wonder about the whole L.A. thing... it seems like it might have impacted the story a little more than it did.

I think it could well be connected to what Gwendolyn Post said in Revelations, they've done that before, made a passing reference to something and then picked up on it in a later series, such as with the first evil.
I just watched A New Man too and I agree with Giant Michael, I think s8 is connected to s4 in more than one way and Ethan Rayne is a big clue there...
Hey, it would be great to catch up with Riley in this arc!
