Buffy jokes about her mother having an aneurysm when she sees the bill on college textbooks...
Am I the only who gets really uncomfortable everytime Buffy says this line? I know it's not like she could have known how her mother died but it justs scratches me the wrong way...
I guess is why people shouldn't makes jokes about the deaths of loved ones. Do you think Buffy even remembers saying it? Probably not.

I doubt Buffy remembers it cos it was pretty random. I dont necessarily get uncomfortable about it its just ironic or whatever the word is, and perhaps accidentally forshadowingj ust like when buffy says to xander in 'Dead Man's Party' "its all fun and games til someone losing an eye".

I don't think Buffy remembers saying it, but it's possible Joss remembered having Buffy say it and that's why he chose that rather than a heart attack or something, to be ironic.

I agree with everybody. It was just a random line/joke Buffy decided to say...so i would think she wouldn't even remember saying it.

Huh. I never made that connection before. I wonder if that was done purposefully or not..

Right there with ya, RexyB, that line always gives me an uncomfortableness as well. It could be that Joss threw it in there as a foreshadowing of what would happen to Joyce the next season. Or, as scarygothgirl said, perhaps Joss simply remembered Buffy having that line and wanted to pay it off. Whatever the reason, I do cringe every time I hear Buffy say it. I doubt she would remember it, though. It makes sense that she would have blocked it from her memory.

Am I the only who gets really uncomfortable everytime Buffy says this line? Not only are you not the only one, but " Funny Aneurysm Moment" actually has its own page on TVTropes. Funny Aneurysm Moment
A scene, joke, or offhand line that was originally meant to be funny or light-hearted but which, due to traumatic events in future episodes of a show or in real life, now makes the viewer cringe when it is seen in reruns.
This often has to do with a character or actor's death and is named for a line from the Buffy episode "The Freshman" in which Buffy hopes that her mother will have a "funny aneurysm" when she sees the cost of Buffy's college textbooks. The line becomes cringeworthy after Buffy's mother dies of an aneurysm later in the series.

I never really noticed this before but can now see the irony and importance of it. I wonder if it was done on purpose or if it was just a not really thought about funny line?
