Plus, Chinese hookers and people with names oddly similar to mine... lol Oh, and that yellow parchment that the old man slaps on Angel's head... I'm wondering if it's the same thing they do in those old Chinese vampire movies, with the hoppy vampires. It usually renders them motionless, so we'll see. If that's the case, it'll be interesting to see the list of things that repel/disarm vampires extend beyond the Judeo-Christian realm.

I agree with you Wenxina. I hate how nearly every vampire work is polarized with Judeo-Christian being the only religous threat. It'd be nice to see acknowledged other cultures practice the creatures of the night.

The first issue of this was nice. Not too much to tell from since he didn't talk much but I think tischman has a good handle on Angel.
The guesses about the paper stopping vampires was correct but it had a twist that was kind of reminescent of Angelus.
I think this'll be one of the better minis in the coming days.

Having all but given up on IDW's Angel titles in the past few months I pretty much picked this up on a whim today. The post- After The Fall work on the title has been pretty awful (Armstrong was bad, but Willingham's work has been shockingly terrible) I pretty much decided to save myself a few bucks on a month and save myself the grief of having to read work from writers who clearly have no handle on the characters nor on the universe they inhabit (Being a long time reader of Pat's reviews, I'd be 100% in support of the title going to talented fans like him as opposed to established writers who don't really have much to offer to this world.). So yeah, rambling, I picked this up on a complete whim only because I've grown to really love Urru's art and I always dug Angel's flashbacks to an insane degree.
What a great buy this turned out to be, from the wonderful art work to the interesting concepts already introduced in the first issue Tischman and Urru seem like a good team. Offering a glance at the indifferent souled Angel we only got to glimpse in episodes like Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been? and Why We Fight the story unfolds at a decent pace, never falling prey to familiarity. This time in Angel's life (one that arguably spanned the better part of a century) is one that's been given so little light that almost any decent story set in this time is likely to play well with readers. This is an Angel so drastically different then the hero we came to know over the years, and yet fundamentally not much separates the two sides aside from emotional maturity and an embrace of love and friendship that he would later experience in the 90s. Even still, Barbary Coast offers a slightly different slant on this sadsack Angel, one that is simply out for himself and wishes to make the pain his soul causes him go away. It's an interesting place to see him at and it gives the character a desperation rarely seen, as Angel essentially acts as a Bounty Hunter here, tasked to retrieve a Chinese Prostitute for a fairly unseemly character named Xin. Interesting stuff. The time period itself, early 1900s (one assumes this takes place after Angel's trip to China during the Boxer Rebellion if only for where the character's at emotionally) San Fransisco is well presented and makes for a great backdrop to an adventure story.
Anyways, that's just my rambles on it... I haven't been around here in far too long.

I picked issue 1 last and I must say that it was a good read...much better than the current Angel title.
Does anyone know when exactly this takes place?

It takes place in 1906; the year of the San Francisco earthquake. The Opera singer Enrico Caruso is mentioned at the beginning - he was performing in San Fran the time of the earthquake. I believe he will be making a cameo:)
Great news about #2 coming out Wednesday - good comic day:)

Round two of Barbary coast is proving yet again that Tischman has a good handle on Angel, his mannerisms and a believable story in his history. sorry for the bad pun but things seem to really be "heating up" for Angel in san francisco.

This wrapped up nicely. I love that this gives you a sense for how long wolfram and hart have been watching angel. I hope this inspires future writers to deal with a fitting conclusion to wolfram and harts involvment angels life.

I bought this too! I bought this too!
The timing is really great, barely a year or so after Angel's re-en-soul-ment (prefixy barely begins to describe). The writing was awesome, Urru was back on form... what's not to love? This one also definitely had a Serenity: Those Left Behind feeling to it too, trying to connect one major event (in this case, Angel's gypsy curse) with another (his life in L.A.). Of course, we know he doesn't go right to L.A. - there's that time he spent in, where was it, Montana or South Dakota during the Great Depression? I also loved the twist at the end with Wolfram & Hart - kinda makes you think about how long they've been planning or known about the Apocalypse.
All in all, a great read. Maybe my second favorite non-canon Angel book, behind Only Human.

It makes you think about how what Wolfram and Hart did to Angel in the time we've seen him interact with them doesn't measure up to all the planning and time they seem to have invested in him. I really hope that is touched upon down the line because there is still potential there for more story.
