So I've started a rewatch of Buffy and just finished the first season, and I have a few issues with the Master and lore surrounding him being stuck in the Hellmouth. People probably have talked about it before but I wanted to see what people think.
The Master got stuck in the Hellmouth, "like cork in a bottle" according to Giles, when he tried to open it. That I understand, and it stands to reason that him then escaping would open the Hellmouth, but there are a few questions.
Nightmares - When the master was part of Buffy's dream in Nightmares, he seemed to be aware that it was her dream that was causing it, and earlier he knew what was happening up top. So did he really get out of the Hellmouth for that brief window, or was a dream manifestation of him? If it was him, which it seemed to be, then the Hellmouth should have opened. Though there is the argument that none of them were near the Hellmouth at the time so they wouldn't know and everything went back to normal in the end. Thoughts?
Prophecy Girl - Why does killing him close the Hellmouth? They make no explanation as to why and just assume so. Even though him getting out is what opens it, why does him dying close it? If he's the cork, destroying the cork doesn't make the bottle less open. It could potentially have something to do with the original spell or what-have-you he used to open it when he got stuck, but there is no explanation in that sense but they just seem to know and there seems to be no reason for that. Thoughts?
The Wish - I'm sure it's been mentioned, but it really bugs me that when he controls Sunnydale in the alternate universe that the Hellmouth hadn't opened. If the cork in the bottle theory is what we're going with, no matter how he got out, Buffy's blood or The Harvest, the Hellmouth would open. However the whitehats are in the library and there is no damage, and while it could have been fixed, in the first season they make such a big deal that the demons are so great and so many it would be the end of the world. The Master demon-less, only controls Sunnydale. Thoughts?
Just some questions on the subject. I still really enjoyed my rewatch, but I wonder. They could just be plot holes, which are fine, but I always like to find a way to explain things away so that the world seems more real.
