So I have had this question running around in my brain for a while and I just can't figure it out.... Master is very very old right, so is/was Kakistos... so why is it that Kakistos has cloven hands and feet... when Master doesn't... Does anyone know?

My guess is that vampires change differently when they age. The prince of lies in Why We Fight (Ats, S5) also had a different look from The Master and Kakistos.

Click on the spoiler tags to see my reply, but be warned that there are spoilers for "Last Gleaming" in there. Well, not more than the banner, I guess, but still... Simplest answer would be that Kakistos is older than the Master. Kakistos was supposedly already ancient around the time of the Greek civilization (thousands of years ago), whereas the Master is reportedly 800 years old (as stated in #38, seen in the preview).

I'm fairly certain I read an explanation by Joss one time, where he said that different vampires actually began to resemble different animals as they aged. Like Kakistos was becoming more ram-like while The Master had begun to take on a batlike appearance. It's supposed to symbolize the animal within.

I always just assumed that there were different types of demons that could possess the human body when they became a vampire and what it looked like ended up being different from one another as they age.

It's understood though -- as vampires age, they look less and less human. I suppose most vampires don't survive long enough that they are readily distinguishable from humans (except of course when they're wearing the "demon face.") Am I wrong? My vote is with wenxina.

I don't think there was a explanation in the series?
