unlike others I didn't have a problem with Buffy setting the vampire on fire... Did anybody have a problem with Buffy lighting the vamp on fire? I clearly found it to be beyond awesome as everyone can tell by my banner.

I clearly found it to be beyond awesome as everyone can tell by my banner. I loved that scene too. The shot of the four of them walking away with the burning vampire in the background was amazing. It has to be one of my favourite shots of the season. It was a very powerful and slightly dark scene.

I hope Dracula plays a role in the next issue. So far, he's doing very little to effect the plot, other than uncomfortbale racist jokes and furthering whatever fanboy crush Goddard has on him and Xander.
Not impressed by this issue.

Oh...My...God! What a BRILLIANT issue! Renee impaled on the Scythe? Poor Renee, and poor XANDER! As soon as the blood splattered on him, I knew Renee had been stabbed. Just as they had their first kiss and then Toru stabs her. Although, Willow's magic healing powers on the soldiers in 'The Long Way Home' may come in handy here. Although, she might not be dead, it doesn't look like she's coming back from that. I'm shocked! Also, Aiko's body hung up on a building in Tokyo? Shocked me too. I loved the scene with Buffy, Xander, Willow and Renee as a schoolgirl as bait with the vampire. And the Aiko's body carried by Buffy scene was heartbreaking. And Giant Dawn stomping round Tokyo? LOVED IT! I loved her entrance. "Hi. Or, I mean...Roar?". Excellent. This season is really picking up. This arc is amazingly good! Can't wait for part 4, the conclusion.

Weren't we all saying not too long ago that we wanted to see Buffy the Vampire Slayer get back to actually slaying some vampires? That's what this arc has done: reintroduced vampires as bad guys, rather than just going for the bigger and bigger demons each time. And having them have Dracula's powers makes them more interesting as baddies, a bigger threat than just your typical, garden-variety vamps. So if you're gonna give them Dracula's powers, don't you have to bring Dracula into the story (somehow), too?
I wasn't a big Dracula fan to begin with, based on his one episode on the show, and tho the scenes with him, Xander, and Renee last issue were funny, they took up a lot of space that could've been spent on other things. Still, if bringing him back for 3 issues is what it takes to add some badass vampires back to the plot, then I'll take it...

Probably one of the strongest issues of "Wolves at the Gate" so far, overall, with one major gripe. The good stuff first, though: Buffy's solemnity at taking care of the fallen Slayer; Dracula actually being useful rather than just be a shoehorned-in nod to a long ago single episode and an obscure one-shot comic; Buffy, Satsu, and "Ma'am" (and particularly, Satsu standing up for herself). Also, art was very, very solid this issue. Jeanty's getting better.
I was not pleased with Renee's death. I think that's the fastest jump from the kiss to one member of a couple's death in a Whedonverse story so far, and at this point, it's the expected thing to know that as soon as a couple forms, one of them is going to die. This was an especially cheap shot, and I get extreme "refrigerator" vibes from this. What's a woman in a refrigerator? Google it. It's a comic book character, who may be strong in her own right, who gets killed off solely to provide a catalyst for the boyfriend's angst and further character development--'cause I bet you what we get out of this is Xander going apenuts, and not so much focus on Renee herself. A very, very cheap and sexist writing trope I am ashamed to see in a Whedonverse series.

I was also proud of Satsu for standing up for herself to Buffy. And Buffy's "I can't believe I find it sexy when she calls me "Ma'am"" was funny.

A very, very cheap and sexist writing trope I am ashamed to see in a Whedonverse series. Sexist? Lol, you might not like that one of the 432847893275975 female characters in this comic was killed off but going so far to call it sexist? She, like Anya, was a supporting character for Xander. She was either going to be with him forever or her character was only temporary and would have left or died or disappeared. Saying a comic/story/show where there are only two main male characters, calling it sexist because one of the dozen or so female characters was killed off is kind of...well, stupid to be honest

Wow! I finally read this issue and wish I hadn't waited so long. The scene at the end with Renee was a total shocker to me! Especially since she and Xander just kissed right before that and I actually was also just starting to like her in this issue. In fact, I think this is one of the issues in the recent past that has had the biggest effect on me as far as getting sucked into the story. Before this, I would basically read each issue and think "Oh, well I'll see what happens next month." This time, I NEED to know what happens! Thank god #15 comes out in a week and a half or so.
Other things:
I liked Willow's little reference to Giles.
It surprised me when Satsu was so direct about disobeying Buffy's order. It also surprised me when Buffy made the little reference about finding it sexy when Satsu called her "Ma'am".
The scene with Aiko's body tied up was actually pretty intense, which was pretty powerful considering we had only gotten to know this girl for one issue. You could just feel the horror and the tension of everybody as they stared up at her body.

And I also know what you mean about NEEDING to know what happens next issue. I think this is the first cliffhanger this season where someone's life is at stake in a BIG way.

I know it really shows how much the book and characters have progressed because can you imagine if we had Renee getting stabbed like that at the end of issue 1 nobody would really care. But now we have more story for Renne and we have more of a feel for who she is. It makes us feel for her and now Xander.

So, I just read the issue. Finally, I know. I thought it was AMAZING that Paul got us mentioned in Slay The Critics. Phil should be extremely happy (and probably is, and has probably already posted about his happiness, and I just haven't read said possible post); it made me feel oddly special. I say "oddly" because I'm not Phil. It's so great to know that I'm a part of something so big, even if its a small part.
What the hell is with Dracula with the shades? He looks like Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka! And I don't think his dialogue fits with the constant tone he had going in Buffy vs. Dracula.
To tell the truth, I hope Renee is dead for two reasons:
1. I'm still wanting Buffy and Xander to be together ever since the constant togetherness of them in the earlier issues.
2. It'd be cool if her death was used to show that the Scythe can resurrect Slayers. This theory is just that, a theory, brought on by another member. But I like the theory.
Also, what is with Buffy's "Oh my god!" after she finds out what the Scythe is being used for? One second she's brave and blunt, then she's shocked and freaked, then she's brave and blunt again. Not good, IMO.

I have the feeling that soon there will be a rift starting between Xander and Buffy because every love interest he has had since Buffy came to Sunnydale either died because of something supernatural or they have been a demon. Poor Xander :-( Perhaps we will have and Selfless-moment again, when Buffy was all "It's just business" about killing Anya. It wouldn't surprise me if Buffy said "Get over her." in a insenstive way, without thinking. She's been pretty... unsocial lately.

Not good, IMO. I have no idea why I'm making such a big deal out of this, but that made me mad. I think it's just that the way Georges drew her reaction was pretty bad, and I can't get Sarah's voice in my head saying it. That just annoyed me.

Really? I think that after almost 10 years as a slayer and a leader, Buffy has learned to recover and/or hide her emotions pretty well. Can't get all weepy in front of the troops
I do think that in the "click"panel(is it called pannel?) she could have been drawn with some repressed rage, but perhaps she just had to go cold or else she'd break down. This isn't the same Buffy same we knew in the early seasons.

Normally Buffy only reacts like that when its a personal attack/trauma. The "oh my god" gasp reaction reminds me of when she had to kill Angel and send him to hell in Becoming. And since then Buffy has hardened a lot...I think she would've reacted to the de-slayerizing spell without the comical hand gesture (pardon the pun). Rather if she'd closed her eyes, clenched her fists and said "Oh my God" with a shocked expression. I think her reacting this way was a bit too emotive for her character. I don't think it registers as being equally traumatic to how she felt after sending Angel to hell in this Becoming scene.

Perhaps it's not a "oh my God, I'm so afraid for their/our safety" it could be a "oh my God how could I not have realized that?"
Just a thought.
Any way, she looked a bit shocked and her hand moved to cover her mouth(I guess i read her differently than you guys). True, that's a lot of emotion compared to how emotionless she has been in season 6 and 7, but I still don't see how it's out of character.

I don't see it as being out of character, it's just where it was placed within the scene, it just didn't fit with the way Georges drew her. I think it definitely called for an "oh my god", it's just the way it was placed in there.
