**Spoilers**
I think that this "massive hit" may have something to do with Satsu. In both of the TOYL issue covers Satsu is nowhere.
Wonder... perhaps she got depowered, went through some portal, or even [gasp!!] died.
Can't wait to find out!

Wonder... perhaps she got depowered, went through some portal, or even [gasp!!] died. Can't wait to find out! I think that was the conclusion everyone jumped to when this blurb came out--"OMG, Satsu's toast!"--but to me, "massive hit" just doesn't sound like a description that would be used for the death of just a single character. Unless that character were Buffy or Willow (not even sure it would apply to Xander). "Massive hit" strikes me more as something bad happening on a large scale. A large number of slayers get de-powered. A large number of slayers (anonymous ones we've never met) get killed. Or--and this is what I'm guessing it's going to be--the castle gets destroyed while they're gone, leaving them without a base of operations. After Satsu suggested they leave some girls behind to guard it last issue, and Buffy completely rejected the idea, my spider-sense seriously began to tingle... Plus, *** SPOILERS FOR LATER IN THE SEASON!! *** We know something is going to happen later that's going to make them being viewed as terrorists look like nothing in comparison, so if they become the World's Most Wanted, they wouldn't be living in the castle anymore, anyway, where they'd be easy to find. The castle being destroyed even before that could be part of the setup for that development.

I did read those conclusions prior, but I really wonder if the blurb writers are that finicky when it comes to their diction. Could be just a poor choice in words. I'm trying to connect the Japanese Vamps with Buffy and Willow's trip to NYC, and why Satsu isn't there.EDIT: It very well could be something on a more massive scale, and Satsu is caught in the middle. Also wanted to say I got the same feeling about the Castle Joss does seem keen to displace the Scoobs out of where they feel comfortable, physically and metaphorically. The high school, Magic Box, ohhhh SUNNYDALE... lol. Definitely a trend.

Oops, then sorry for being repetitive. I knew I'd said it somewhere, and thought it was probably here, but wasn't sure. Besides, not everyone reads every post, so I think it's okay to be a little repetitive if the same topic comes up again somewhere down the line...

Maybe the Japanese vamps lure the slayers into some sort of a trap in a public place where they will "accidentally" injure many innocent people thus framing Buffy and her girls as terrorists.

Spoilers for issue #21 and beyond below: Scott Allie at the NYC Dark Horse panel, talking about issues #21-25: "The world of Buffy's going to change, for the worse. If the slayers are looked on as terrorists now, it's only going to get much, much worse." www.slayaliveforums.proboards50.com/index.cgi?board=buffyseason8&action=display&thread=2111

I'm not sure if I like where this arc is headed... terrorism is such a hot button in American society... and all the implications to Domestic and Foreign policy... I dred the discussions about politics in this forum for those issues I'm totally with you there. The last thing I want is S8 to turn into a Message from Joss on the evils of the Patriot Act, or some such. If I want to read about politics, there are plenty of places I can go to read about politics; I don't want it intruding on my fiction. Things like "Buffy" are my way of getting away from the real world for a little while... But I'm gonna wait and see what that comment from Allie means, and what direction the story actually goes, before I get all worked up about it...

Considering the circumstances of the story, it would be unlikely that a global organisation of people trained to fight with weapons who have access to an undefined but assumed large amount of resources would be looked on fondly by the American government/any national government. I think it's a natural progression of the story and an interesting one at that. While I agree with you that I don't want the story to be saturated with Joss' political beliefs, I doubt it will be. He is too intelligent to do that. I think the story will unfold in a way that is reflective of the way humans understand power. Buffy and her organisation are very powerful, people and the demon world fear power. They also fear what they don't understand. Combine those and the chance for destruction is huge.

Even if it does integrate some political message or his view on international relations it wouldnt bother us for Joss has managed to do that many times in the past-expressing his opinion via either the mouth of a character or an episode's story. Some examples that come in mind are ,the whole gun episode in season 3 (with Jonathan having a gun -Buffy suspecting that he wishes to shoot students whilst he intended to commit suicide) , the Ted episode in season 2 -domestic abuse- , the She episode in Angel -how some cultures abuse women by removing a part of tehm that helps them find pleasure in sexual acts amd several others that i donnot recall right now. Tehn againJoss is a writer , a man of the intelect so i wont be surprised if he tries to act against a theory or situation that is inappropriate according to hsi beliefs

I know that his political beliefs have always been a part of his shows, but one of the things I really appreciated and admired about him as a storyteller was that they were slipped in there subtly enough that they weren't beating you over the head.

Renee is dead! She was okay I suppose but does anyone really care??? hell yeah. i think she could have developed into a dear character for us. But mostly I feel for Xander. I hope he won't become Dracula's servant again, just because he's feeling depressed. it's disturbing how comfortable they were in issue 13(haven't read 14). i mean hello! Dracula mind-seduced-controlled you. Poor thing, must still be thralled. Renee come back, save him!
