My cousin Nathan was born 3 months early and only weighed 1 pound 5 oz. He was the size of a barbie doll and could fit in a hand. That sounds so cute. I've never seen a tiny baby in person, lol It wasn't cute at all. They had a tube inside of him for at least a month. He couldn't breathe on his own. Now he's 5 or 6 and his only problem is that he's short. He's also very thin. But he's very smart for his age and he's in gymnastics. Our family has fun saying he looks like a little Brad Pitt. Here's a pic from either '05 or '06. He was born in '01 or '02 on October 24th. He's thinner now.

I'm sorry about the "cute" statement, that must have been scary. It's great that he's doing well now, though.

Like I said above, I was born v early too. I was less than 3lbs at birth and my dad always talks about how he could hold me with my head at his finger tips and my fee tdidnt reach past his wrist. I am fine now though

Nathan is very cute now!! Is your sister breast feeding? Only asking cause it is the healthiest milk for a baby - and expecially a preemie. Yes. She is trying. Hard for a first time mom that was early and hasn't gotten to be around the baby very much. Hard to get enough. But she is trying. Now she is on a feeding tube. She is jaundiced as well. Maybe wednesday.....

My son was also on a feeding tube - they told me that he hadn't developed the sucking reflex and once he started sucking on the tub, then they would change him over to regular feeding. Jaundice is also normal - and they (nurses) are pretty good at keeping an eye on it. The nurses got pretty attached to my son - preemies are there so much longer and so the nurses get a chance to connect with them - which is nice because then they keep a really good eye on the baby.
And send your sister my best as well - I know it is tough - I went home after 3 days, but my son wasn't released for almost 6 weeks. I would wake up at night thinking I dreamt the whole thing. Will they let your sister sit by the incubator and reach inside so she can stroke the baby? Bonding is just as important for the mother as it is for the baby. Touch and soft sounds (mommy humming sounds) are good. They should allow it.
