The two worst things about S4 are Evil Cordy and Connor. Evil Cordy, well, I'm not sure whether playing "evil" is just out of Charisma's range, or if the writers simply gave her crappy material to work with (or both), but that character was almost unwatchable. Way too over-the-toply arch. And the writers just did a hatchet-job on poor Connor, letting him spend the whole season being led around by the "happy" portion of his anatomy just because he'd finally gotten some and thought he was "touching God" (to use his mom's phrase ). How could a kid who was smart enough to get into Stanford be that gullible? But the two of them alone weren't enough to completely spoil the season. Nearly all of the episodes, if you take them out of context of the overall season and just judge them on their own, are good-to-great. The writers never lost focus on the characters (as happened too often in S7 of "Buffy"), and so I have no trouble understanding the people who say "S4 is awesome!", unlike the people who love S7 of "Buffy", which I still can't figure out where that comes from. The real problem with S4 of "Angel" comes when you try to fit all those individual pieces (episodes) into a single whole (seasonal arc) that's consistent and cohesive, beginning to end. So much of the first half of the season is dominated by the rain of fire, and the Beast, and the sun being blotted out, and bringing forth Angelus, and yet none of this really ties into the Jasmine storyline all that well. The justification is, "Oh, that was all misdirection on Evil Cordy's part to keep the gang occupied while she got pregnant", but that's just what it is: justification. In hindsight, it just feels like filler. As tho the writers sat down and said, "Okay, we've got this storyline coming up at the end of the year of Cordy giving birth to this higher-whatsit; how much cool stuff can we pack into the season before then?" And sure, it was cool. But the reasons for it just don't make a lot of sense. If it all really was intended as nothing but a distraction on EC's part, well, overkill-much? Not unlike trying to kill a fly with a rocket launcher. Some people bash S5 for the standalone-ness of it, but after S4, I'd kinda lost faith in the writers' ability to tell a long, involved, complicated arc that made sense all the way thru. And when you start to examine the Lindsey arc of S5, and how his plan seems to completely change from episode to episode (Jeff Bell admits in the NFA commentary that yes, they were making it up as they went along), I don't think my fears were all that unfounded...

Season 4 reasons Connor/Cordy jasmine Cordy losing her memory Evil cordy and gunn and Wes hating each other all the time good things... Habeas Corpses spin the bottle angel losing his soul and all the eps with faith but none of that makes up for the Connor/Cordy thing so i voted season 4.......

I don't think that Season 4 is a bad season. It may be loopy as hell but I think they did as much damage control as they could. I think the drama was very good and the went to some very dark places that year. Season 1 is almost unwatchable for me.

Ironic that Connor is many people's reason for hating season 4. He's actually the main reason I rewatch it.

I never really understood all of the Season 4 hate. I thought Connor had a great story throughout, and I had no problems with Evil Cordy either, or even Cordy/Connor. It was supposed to be weird, and it was, but it wasn't really Cordy so I never really saw why it was such an issue. I can understand the negative fan response at first, but that was because they didn't know Cordy wasn't really Cordy.
Season 4 just had a fantastic story throughout, I thought, and some of the best writing on a show I have ever seen.
I was never much of a Jasmine fan, but even after rewatching Season 4 twice in the last three months or so, I've really started enjoying those final few episodes, which I originally thought were a little weak after all of the build up.
Season 4 gets a big thumbs up in my book, and is my second favorite season after Season 5.

i also enjoyed season 4...it was a some good writing with the situation they had been handed...Charisma was having a baby and would need some time off near the end...it played out fantastic....only downfall is that she didnt return regulary Season 2 is my worst season...why was angel so obsessed with Darla...he acts like he hasnt seen her in hundreds of years...and it was him that killed her...my opinion, didnt like it...although i loved vamp Darla & Dru together....but then they kinda just disappeared...

I said season 4 but not because of evil Cordy. I thought it was a great season actually and Conner's story is so tragic, however it was so dramatic. It was a crazy soap opera. First with every episode cliff hanging then practically every act break. It's supposed to keep you hooked but it just pissed me off. The only way to watch it is through DVDs, while airing it just drove me mad

Ahw season 4 is by far my favourite season in either show. The start was a bit slow with the three episodes after the great opener. But after that it was on.
My less favourite seaosn is between season 1 and season 5. Season 1 is a bit boring and season 5 lacks the real Angel feeling. I went with season 1 as the 'worst' because it has no real arc.

I gotta go with season one. I love all of them, but this is the frist. Things don't really heat up until the show gets going in the right path. Season four was confusing at parts, but overall, it was good if you look back at it.

For reasons I've already enumerated in other threads about Angel, Season Four. Some of my favorite episodes are in there, but the whole storyline was... well, tell 'em Gunn: "A turgid supernatural soap opera."

For me, the worst thing about Season Four was Jasmine. I really didn't like the way that was handled. The Beast arc was very good, though it just always felt a bit... off. Especially the Connor stuff. After the stellar Season Three, they should have been a bit more consistent. But then they came back with Season Five, which is definitely my favorite, so all is good.
Don't get me wrong, though, I do love the fourth season. I mean, "Home" is a fantastic finale, and that last scene... whew! But it's just the LEAST impressive out of a really impressive bunch.

Oh god easily season one! It was so directionless and had some truly yawn-worthy episodes. I never liked the set, some of the stories were really lame and it still relied way too much on Btvs. I’m sorry but nearly every decent episode in S1 is when a Btvs character shows up.
I just don’t get the s4 hate at all. S4 has nearly always been easily my favourite season of the show. I absolutely love it, I think it’s awesome. I’m a bit conflicted now and don’t know wether or not s2 is better (I used to think it was terribly inconsistent and still do, but some of the episode are just too amazing) but I still love s4. It has its flaws but what season doesn’t? Honestly, I think Btvs s3 is the only the truly flawless season in the Buffyverse.
My list would easily be;
1) Season Two/Season four (Can't decide_ 2) Season Three 3) Season Five 4) Season One
... Season 5 really lacks the Ats feel. Spike is no replacement for Cordy and the show felt like it was missing something without her. It is far too Btvs orientated now that they could mention Buffy whenever they wanted again, and felt like it was taking steps back in all the progress Ats had made to become its own show. I don't dislike s5 but I've never say it was my favourite. It had some wonderful episodes but I'll always prefer s2/s3/s4 over s5.

My least favorite is definitely season 4. The storyline was incredibly boring, in my opinion...it seemed to drag on forever. I guess that's because it started to become too soap opera-y and took itself way too seriously. Plus, Evil Cordy made me dislike the character of Cordelia for a while...her "relationship" with Connor was downright disturbing and Charisma was awful in the role (and that's not really a jab at her acting ability. She's said in numerous interviews that she was so bad as Evil Cordy because she hated the storyline so much that she didn't even bother trying). Still, the season did have some redeeming qualities...the Angelus/Faith arc was great and Spin the Bottle and Orpheus are two of my all-time favorite Angel episodes.

I chose Season 4 after much deliberation. Although I did enjoy Faith's mini-arc and thought the Jasmine storyline was absolutely deliciously creepy and bizarre - the whole relationship with Conner and Cordelia never fails to give me the willies. One of my biggest issues with AtS in general is the direction they decided to go with Cordelia's character. Conner is my least favorite character in the 'verse, and in my opinion, he just got way too much screen time in this season.
